Holiday Short

Here's a short holiday video card I filmed for some friends. They wanted something to send (dvd) and link to (online) rather than your typical static card. This version is the main content without the personalized title messages.

It was filmed in 30p instead of 24p since I wanted to do a quick edit using my RTX100. The shots are a combination of handheld and homemade dolly. I'm happy with how most of it came out. But, the last shot isn't obvious. There's a xmas tree outlined in the sand but it's not visible. I wanted to bring it out in post and add blinking lights. Ran out of time though.

Any comments appreciated. :)

Cheers!

Re: Holiday Short

Whoa... It's a rough crowd out there lately. No comments at all? :-/

Everyone must have been on Santa's naughty list ;)

Re: Holiday Video Card

I think it looks nice -- some of the tracking stuff was excellent. Unfortunately, I just didn't get it. If there was a story or some foundation to it, I'm afraid that I missed it. You said that you'd taken out the title cards, so maybe that helps explain the whole thing, when you see those. Otherwise, just seems like home movies of you driving those little cars.

But yeah, again, on a purely visual level, I thought it looked nice.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, without the titles it's impossible to know what's going on. Also, it was done for some friends that are into racing and the recipients of the video card would relate to that.

I'm interested in comments on the shots themselves. Getting good one of moving subjects was tough. But, it was a lot of fun and excellent practice.

Btw - The tracking shots were done with a homemade skateboard wheel dolly on pvc pipe. The pipe is screwed down onto wood strips.

Re: Holiday Short

hey Hans - I was pretty impressed with those moving shots - would you care to share a pic with us on the skateboard contraption - Ive always wanted to build something similar - small and portable for the outdoors

thnx

Re: Holiday Short

shoots looks funny and fresh ;)

the travellings over the sand are very good, could you shown us how to do it?
thank you

Re: Holiday Short

Man you have some balls getting your camera that close to the sand. Looks good though, I especially liked the dolly shots.

Re: Holiday Short

now that's cool stuff

for the first two minutes

it's cool tough, it looked like a real Chevy spot at times

was this an entry for that December DVX contest?

good job

Re: Holiday Short

Hans... I'm digging it! As someone who was just on that beach two weeks ago... I was impressed with how much I forgot where I was... I mean how I was really that small.

I liked it... I too would like to see that dolly, though I'm figuring you do miniature stuff a lot?? Might that dolly have practical use for us full-sizers?

Re: Holiday Short

That was fun! Some of the dolly shots were great and the location was EXCELLENT! Nice lighting too (looked like the golden hour). I felt it lasted a little long though.

Re: Holiday Short

I liked... some cuts I don't like (frame/compositing almost the same), great dolly (show us some pics).
The photography is good, nice light / color.

Keep going !

Re: Holiday Short

Sorry for these late responses. Just got back from Lake Tahoe and lots of fresh deep powder! ;D No filming, just lots of time on my new snowboard.

Thanks again to all of your comments. It's highly appreciated.

Here's a photo of the dolly during the shoot. As you can see it's rather simple. I used the plans from the "Killer Camera Rigs" book at www.DVcameraRigs.com. The only complaint I have is that the rolling sound is too loud at the moment. This can be lowered a lot by adding a carpet or other soft surface to the deck. And, by using software wheels. The ones I picked up were inexpensive but a little too hard.

For the camera support, I used a sand bag that molded and adjusted for the shots.

unix - was this an entry for that December DVX contest?

No, I hadn't thought of that. But, I shall try one soon when I think I can make something worthy.

CaptainMench - I'm figuring you do miniature stuff a lot??

Heh, no, but now that you mention it and I look at some of the shorts I have posted or done... there is a trend. Hmm.

P.K. Gillock - the location was EXCELLENT! Nice lighting too (looked like the golden hour).

Yes, can't beat having the Golden Gate Bridge as your backdrop. ;)

And, yes, you nailed it for the time. Good eye!

ulisses - some cuts I don't like (frame/compositing almost the same)

Good feedback. Looking back at it I can see what you mean.

Re: Holiday Short

man, you surely bring back memories. I used to love playing with remote control cars. Too bad I would always want to destory them after I played with them. I was one of those destructive kids. Anyhow, that's cool what your doing. It was neat. How old are you by the way? ;)

Re: Holiday Short

Please excuse my obvious ignorance but does the DVX do 30p? I thought it was either 24p (NTSC) or 25p (PAL) with the two corrisponding interlaced modes?
Cheers

Scott....

Re: Holiday Short

Yes Indy...Dvx does 30p The ntsc version anyway, don't know about PAL model
