Holding off on P2

After a lot of reading I have concluded that the HVX200 is the number one contender for the HD camera I drop a large amount of cash on. Because the camera itself is a bit pricey its likely that ill be without the p2 cards for a while at least until they come down a bit. From the research I have done this camera will record in almost every format on the market right now and with the addition of the 1080p mode, making the p2 cards necessary. My question which hasn’t been too clear after reading a lot of previews is will it be able to record HD formats like 720p and 1080i like a lot of the competitors cameras will to standard miniDV tapes. I’ve gotten the impression from reading lots of previews that Panasonic wants all HD recording to be done to p2 cards. While I won’t be able to take full advantage of the camera and the 1080p right when I buy it id like to work my way up if you will with the 720p and the 1080i on the standard miniDV tapes. If someone could clear this up id greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Sadly, it will only record standard definition to miniDV tape. Personally, I think it should have been HDV as well as DV capable, then there would be ABSOLUTELY no reason to consider buying the Sony Z1, but Panasonic have apparently made the decision not to offer this option.

... and 720p ProHD would be nice. I guess it would be costly and maybe impossible as Panasonic dropped out of the HDV consortium.

This has led Panasonic to slag off HDV/ProHD, but there is no doubt in my mind that it would be a very handy option.

HDV and ProHD would have been nice while P2 prices drop, but I would have thought more codecs = more royalties = higher price or sacrifices of the HVX200.

Also, you might have said as well, why not the Sony do DVCproHD? But the unique selling point of the HVX200 is that it's not HDV, but it is affordable HD. HDV might be compact in it's file size, and I've seen good stuff done with it, but I still can't quite see the logic in shooting with a delivery codec.....

Oh well I guess its not the big a deal. I was actually considering buying the DVX100A before I found out about this one. I can live with the standard def quality for a while until the p2 prices come down and at least I'm set for the future with real HD.
