Hobos Short Film

The first short I ever made was called "Life of a Hobo" ... I have high expectations - Downloading now...

"What's the point of doing anything if the sun is just going to blow up?"

You guys are not amateur - the writing, casting, acting, shots and editing are all pro. Great work.

Nice work people...I enjoyed this piece a lot. God...More inspiration, just what I need! Keep it up

I laughed a lot.....not like stomach ache/can't breathe laughing.....but more like "that was genuinely funny and not cheesy" laughing.
Good job with the script, and the actors were hilarious. Were you in it?

I think I am in love with this Rebecca girl....she is awesome.

I am in the process of making my first short, so this is definitely good inspiration.

Only crits I have are: there were a couple opening shots that were shaky and/or out of focus.
but thats minor stuff.

Nice job....I am definitely a fan.
Any more projects out?

I really liked this one! It looked good, the music was great, too. And as a side note, the cinematographer's name is on my top ten list: Shanky Totobonky

Keep up the good work!!!

Awesome work! I love the lighting throughout most of it. Especially the first shot of the teacher and the shots of Rebecca in the park with that leafless tree in the background are beautiful. Favorite character - THE TEACHER. He's so LOUD and funny!

Great work! Keep it up!

thanks peeps! yes I think in many cases LOUD = funny. you can take any joke and if you say it loud enough, it will be funny, trust me on this one.

Hey great work. I don't know if I should laugh or cry. IT was funny but had a very sad mood to the whole film. Good work I liked it. BTW, how long have you been working on this? I remember seeing a trailer for this like 6 months ago.

shot it about two years ago, working on it sporadically had a final cut one year later. just decided to put it online recently.

Party Pooper...can you give us a little insight on the making of this. I thought it was great and very funny as well.

Was it filmed with multiple DVX's or just one cam? What other equipment was used (If it's not too much to list).

Third and final part. I have asked this question before in another thread but I'll ask you directly since I have something to reference and maybe you can enlighten me. I will assume this was shot with one cam so how do you get all of your audio to blend well from shot to shot. Specifically the ambience like the birds chirping and the footsteps. Was this added in post or was it recorded live? Was the audio recorded seperately or *in-cam*? Just give a brief explaination about how it all came together so seamlessly if you don't mind. Thank you for your patience and would love to have a few answers about this. Thanks. ~reservoir~

reservoir, no problem:

1 DVX (original), entry level sennheiser shotgun mic, blimp windscreen (not sure of the brand)

despite the way the end credits look, the crew was myself and jason lorig on boom for most of the shoot.

i'm no audio expert but i'll share what i know. if you play the audio very loud the audio becomes less seamless. in the timeline, from shot to shot usually the ambient audio would overlap and fade into eachother. i even spent a couple days trying to ADR (replace audio) but it didn't look very good, so i dropped it. footsteps, birds, some ambience, and box sounds were recorded seperately. here's what my timeline looked like: http://partypooperfilms.com/avid.jpg

Wow...that helps to clarify things quite a bit. I guess it is possible to have great quality sound while only recording with one cam. Thanx for the timeline. ~reservoir~

I did not like the sound, it was one thing that really didn't do it for me. The footsteps were too loud, clear, and not very real. The ability to hear such crisp footsteps in the scenes makes me as a viewer think those places were really quiet. How come I can hear footsteps from people on the other side of the street, but no traffic rumble, no birds, etc...

The rest of it was great. I did not like the Fonzy actor very much, the girl is friggin cute and very good! I think your cut has a lot of scene transitions that were too long, and not very creative. Besides, they had not anything to do with the setting of your film (doc shots of pedestrians in new york looked more like an airline commercial than a funny bittersweet, childish fabule). And the last thing: External - Night / Shots of the city in the morning / TEXT: THE NEXT DAY / External - Day. That's too redundant! you can't stop the film in the final sequences to tell us that the day has arrived, we get it!

But I really liked it, overall, it just had a, as I said, bittersweetness, that was true and soothing. The name of your production house is awesome, including the slogan.

I liked it!

It's not bad, but about half-way through the film I was losing patience. I think the same film could be cut down to about third of its current running time.

Camera was pretty decent, IMO, although the scene with the cutie in front of a lake or a river seemed a bit too hot on the girl's sweater and the water in background.

I'd have the same comments about sound as taubkin - not too believable. OTOH, this was a two-man crew, so it's quite a feat.

Yeah, some of the lines were pretty funny, but having a "lazy bum teenager" at home, it was a bittersweet kind of funny.

Keep them coming!
