HMI bulbs

A gaffer told me that Philips HMI bulbs are inferior to Osram bulbs. Anyone can confirm that? (specifically i'm asking about MSR 575 HR (SE) bulb).

At the shop I work at I've never seen anyone have a preference for the manufacturer of globe that's been put in their HMI's...Not to say a difference couldn't exist, but I have a sneaking suspicion there isn't.

In his book Set Lighting Technician's Handbook, Harry Box never mentions one name brand being superior or inferior to another. He rather says that you should only by name brands - Osram, Phillips, Eiko, GE, etc. - not some unknown brand off eBay.

I have nothing to back it up, but I, too, doubt one is inferior to another.

There is a lot of Chinese product available now at low prices. I too am skeptical of the attention to detail in these globes, not because they won't light up but because I suspect the manufacturers lack the scientific expertise, the technical ability and have an opposite economic incentive to manufacture them to make as smooth and continuous an output spectrum as the serious manufacturers in the US, Japan and Europe with long track records in the movie business.

Philips bulbs are indeed now manufactured in China, buy Osram.
Ah, great. How disappointing. OTOH, I wonder if they gave away all their manufacturing secrets? Western companies have a bad habit of that IMHO. Sorry for the politics.

I like osram. It seems to be the standard in professional lighting. As if hmi's weren't already plagued with consistency issues, i'd not recommend mixing bulb manufacturers unless all units can be matched. I choose osram because almost all pro rental houses use them. Least that is my experience.

C'mon, guys, just cause something is made in china, it doesn't mean it's crap. Nowadays, is really hard to find things that don't at least have components made in china. The problem I see with chinese products is QC, that's what seems to overlooked by chinese companies, but western companies producing in China tend do have a far superior QC over chinese companies.
