HMC40, wideangle or fisheye

So i have a HMC40 and its been great. I shoot snowsports ( boarding and skiing mostly). I'm going to invest in either a wide angle adapter or a fisheye. I would love to hear some thoughts from people who have used either. i have used a lowgrade fisheye before with a low grade consumer camcorder and the image quality was definatley less than par so im wondering if i will run into any of those issues. Anyway any feedback, opinions, or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I know I've read comments from folks that were real happy with the Raynox on an HV20/30, so it probably would not be awful to use with an HMC40. An HMC40 records a notably more detailed image than the HVs though, so it's possible that using the Raynox might soften the images out of an HMC40 a bit.

Robert,

The jury is still out for me as to which one to go with, but right now I'm feeling that the Century adapter is the safe bet. However, I'm still open to new tests...

bob,
with all due respect.
perhaps we should start making stickies?
questions like batteries, lenses, tripods, low light performance, best memory cards, weather FCP or Premiere supports AVCHD....all this questions have popped up and will continue to pop up as more users(including me) start acquiring this device.

we should start building a F.A.Q. about the HMC40.

Alejo,

For what it's worth, I used to carry a good quality Sony 0.7 wide angle for my previous Sony camera. It produced good results, but I found myself rarely using it. So far I've had no need to use one with the HMC40, preferring instead to simplify shot composition.

Obviously other's mileage will vary, but freeing myself from another accessory translates to more shooting time.

Good luck with your search,
Dan

Alejo,

I'm all in favor of FAQs & Stickies, but I'm only "The Professor" here and not a moderator. :D

Some of the things worth making Stickies FAQs are:

> Should I buy an HMC40 or ...?
> Wide angle adapters, which one?
> Mics & XLR Adapters which one should I get?
> Scene File Settings, what do I use?

I'm sure there are others, but those come to the top of my head.

The first one seems the easiest and the other three are still in progress as finding answers. For example, I have yet to really play with the settings, so I can't be sure what works the best and what stinks for settings. Each test takes time, so I'll only be able to do a little bit at a time. However, I'll share what I find out as I'm able to try it out.

Totally agree
We need more input. But it seems that we are getting biggerand bigger
I hope to be an user soon
So, I cone here every day to find out about the hmc40 so when I get it I will spend more time enjoying it

I use the panasonic .7x wide angle nearly all the time on my hmc40. It's in my opinion the way it should be from the factory. There's no vignetting till you try to use it with a filter on the camera side. Anyone know what size the outer ring is on the panasonic wide angle? I'd like to get a filter without outer ring to see if I can use one .9 nd filter without vignetting.

Chris

i like fisheyes mainly because of the wider view, i myself film snowboarding and most action sports, but if you dont wat barrel distortion get a wide angle

Hey man, personally I think fisheyes are horrendous, especially if they produce vignetting. I would much rather watch a well filmed edit with stabilized follow cams and some thought put into the filming, rather than the generic skate edit that shows no skill of videography whatsoever. I'm planning on buying an HMC40 soon and will probably buy the Century .5x, but at $160, I kind of doubt the performance. I've seen samples of how the footage looks with it, and it's pretty good, but no comparisons to a nicer wide angle.

So what is a nicer wide angle. I have the Raynox and I get a lot of glares from all light sources. Very rarely will I get a clean picture. I am thinking about going to the century myself.

You need a lens hood or matt box to shield the lens. Here is my inexpensive solution for the Panny wide angle. This setup can take 4x4 filters, but I haven't ponied it up yet for that.

The better option for fisheye are:

Century mk1 screwed :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-W9QXv0t1BM

Century or Opteka babydeath lens :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1KUbegF5oI&feature=related

Nikon FC-E9 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFogpgmwNdw

I think the century mk1 look really good on the hmc40 (esthetically)
But it's more expensive.

THe babydeath and the fc-e9 are cheaper and does pretty much the same thing. I think the FC-E9 is the widest.
