Anyone tried the hmc40 for sports or fast movement action?
On the fence right now about this cam. 95% of what i shoot is fast movement.
Anyone done any tests? Is motion blur a big problem for this cam?

I have used mine for shooting some wake-boarding/lake activities and some white-water Kayaking. You can see my footage at http://www.zfhproductions.com/Movies.html The two that say HD were shot with the HMC40.

I have also shot some bmx in pretty low light. The footage was kinda grainy due to high gain, but as for the picture and capturing the quick movements, it looks good.

Nice yak'n footage! Ok I think I'm sold on it now. I'm gonna mostly be using the 60p, as you were, and i think it looks great. Good job!

Ok now to find the best deal on the new camera!
Prices seem pretty well equal amongst all retailers. Are there any retailers offering anything extra. Battery/cards etc?

ZFH is the only one close to showing some footage using the HMC40 of good action with this camera. ZFH, do you have any stuff using this camera handheld yet?

Chris

Oh, you're steady...nice work. Your videos are quite a bit better than others I've seen. I'm curious if you wouldn't mind sharing:

1) Settings on the camera
2) Editing software
3) Exported compression settings, size, etc for web use

I'm really interested in this camera, but because nearly all my stuff is going to be shot handlheld, I'm worried about the 3mos sensor more than anything. The size of the camera is enticing...I wonder if a monopod and this camera would suffice...I'm just always moving around to catch the action, but a steady shot when panning is a must. That's the only thing I didn't see you do a lot of in your videos as panning. What's your thoughts? Are you shooting with OIS on all the time? 720/60p? Thanks for the help...you guys are in NC? Where at? I'm moving to Boone after I get married at the end of the year. My fiance lives there...

Chris

Pretty much everything was shot in either 720/60p or 1080/30p. OIS was on pretty much all the time. It seems to work very well.

I edit with Final Cut Pro and compress with Adobe Media Encoder to a F4V file at 960x540.

As far as panning goes, it seems to be good. I shot some DH mountain biking today and did a lot more panning. That video should be up sometime pretty soon.

I go to school at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC.

That's great to hear, because your footage is the best I've seen, especially handheld. I was steering away from the camera based on some others I've seen, but I love the size of this camera and your footage is great. I look forward to see your latest footage...Most of my stuff is shot outdoors too, so I'm thinking it will be okay if the cmos sensors don't cause too much jello effect.

I'm curious, do you use the Adobe Media Encorder because the Final Cut Pro ones stink? I found that when I was experimenting with it the other day...it was very weird, but Premier's output just using their pre-selected youtube hd was much better than final cut's for some reason. But, I'm a total newbie, so trying to figure all this out.

Chris

Do you upload to youtube ever? I'm curious how they would look using the default youtube hd settings from adobe...I've found it to be the best output so far from Adobe for us on youtube.

Chris

Indeed, ZHF's footage is the best so far shot with the HMC40. He has good eye and solid handheld work.

I'm very tempted to buy this and do a bunch of test footage and post this up for everyone, because other than ZFH's stuff, I'm not seeing much more than tripod shot stills and very little action and handheld use. I'm very interested in the results, and impatient. :) I guess I could return it if it's not what I'm looking for...

Chris

Just placed my order on Amazon.com...will plan to post a bunch of video tests...nothing professional, just things I've been wondering about this camera in trying to make a decision. I won't be able to do any of it till after the 12th, though.
