HMC40 or HMC41

Hi all.

I'm new here and about to upgrade to the big boys league :)
I currently have a Canon HV20 and I decided to grow to the HMC40.
I live in Israel and although I will be in B&H in a couple of months, I was told it's best if I take the local version which is the HMC41.
Can anyone tell me the difference? I understand that the 41 does only 50i and 25p. is that a degradation from the HMC40?

Any thought would be highly appreciates.

Thanks.

Your power and TV vertical frequency in Israel is 50 Hz; in the US, it's 60 Hz.

The HMC40 is a camera designed for 60 Hz, like: 1080/60i, 1080/30p, 1080/24p, 720/60p, 720/30p, 720/24p.

The HMC41 is a camera designed for 50 Hz, like: 1080/50i, 1080/25p, 720/50p, 720/25p.

Unless you are shooting footage for the US or another 60 Hz country, you should get the camera that supports your country's standards.

Thanks Bob.

I thought that these days, when all equipment (TV's, DVDs and even the editing SW) can all handle all systems, it has no difference.

I shoot for everyone (including the US) and for the Internet.

Thanks again for the explanation.

That world you describe, doesn't exist. USA DVD players can't play PAL DVDs, USA TVs can't display PAL TV signals. The PAL equipment is more modern than the USA stuff, as PAL DVD players can display 24p DVDs, but ... no, it still makes a pretty big difference.

The internet is the great equalizer, the internet lets you download and play 24p or 25p files, but the DVD and television still have almost as much division as they always did.

No, I don't think so. That's true of the HPX171 and HMC151, but I don't think the HMC41 can do that, I think it's only 25p/50i.

i'm a bit confused.

I know now that there is the HMC40, there is HMC41E in Israel, I can see that B&H are selling the PAL version of the HMC40 and it's called HMC42...
In the US there is the HMC150 and in Israel there is the PAL version called HMC154...
Anyone from Panasonic can shed some light on this please?

Thanks.

I'm not sure which exact model is the one for Israel, but I can tell you the HMC41E is the model for Europe. Europe always gets the "1" models, and southeast Asia gets the "2" models. I don't know which model goes to the Middle East... maybe "3"?

You are right. Israel is 41E.
In that case, why is the 150 called 154 in Israel?
Are they all the same? (I mean the PAL system ending 1 and 2)?

The difference is in which territory the units are marketed, and which division is responsible for warranty service.

The "1" means europe, the "2" means southeast asia. If someone in Australia buys an HMC151E, they won't get warranty service in Australia, and if someone in Europe buys an HMC152EN, they won't get warrany service in Europe.
