HMC40 lens hood

So, it looks like I am picking up a used HMC40, but the catch is that the original lens hood is missing. I figure, just contact Panasonic through their parts website, find the replacement, and order it - no problem, right?

But I couldn't find that part on the website, and when I submitted a query, I got this email back:

Dear Will,

The item that you have requested, part number VYQ5056, has been discontinued and is no longer available. The part is beyond our parts retention period, and we no longer manufacture this part. I have no replacement available.

You may want to try www.partstore.com they sometimes carry items we no longer do.

I’m sorry that I don’t have better news today.

I was a bit shocked, since they are obviously still making the HMC40... Partstore.com doesn't have it either. Has anyone run into this with Panasonic before? Barry or Jan (especially Jan), if you could jump in here that would make my day.

If indeed there is NO WAY to get a replacement lens hood, anybody have any ideas what I could do instead? I don't want to mount my HMC40 on rails so I can use my Redrock matte box every time I shoot outside...
 
Er, I am a dummy. I found the part at partstore.com by searching for the part # instead of Panasonic>HMC40...

But still, it's weird that Panasonic doesn't make the lens hoods, right?
 
ARGH - I'm back to square one on this... I ordered the lens hood from Partstore.com, but then when it didn't ship, I checked my order status, and it's backordered. I called, and they verified that they can't get this part any more either...

Jan (or anyone else), can you please help me?? :)
 
ouch, that sucks!
i feel like taking it off my camera and storing it!
i don't want to lose a part that can never be replaced.
 
So, I got the number to the Panasonic service center from Jan, and I have called five times and left two messages. No response. This sucks.
 
Finally got through to Panasonic parts. I guess the first email I sent went to the consumer division, and they couldn't find the part since it is made by the broadcast division. Ok - not sure how they came up with the wrong part number then...

The correct part number is VYQ5029 for the lens hood, and VGQ0H03 for the lens cap (those are zeroes, not "O"s). I just ordered both - we'll see if this ends the saga. By the way, the number to call to order the stuff is 800-334-4881.

I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else!
 
I was stroller-robbed at the seaquarium and the lens cap was in my bag that they stole, along with the charger.
I can't find any of these parts, and Panasonic never returns phone calls.
