HMC40 Iris Closed?

I suspect this is normal behavior, but it's not what I expected. When in manual iris control the iris goes from f11 to closed. When it's closed, it is...well closed. I expected that closed would be the smallest f-stop and would still pass light. But on mine, when I go to closed there seems to be no light getting to the sensor. My consumer cam has full manual control but its f-stop control behaves more light a photo camera.

Is this normal behavior for the HMC series?
 
Yes, it's normal for all the Panasonics, at least dating back to the DVX100. When it says "close", it's fully closed and all light is blocked from the lens.

Same on the consumer Panasonics.

Also, when it says OPEN it can be anything from F1.8 to F3.0 depending on focal length.
