HMC40 - First Look

Thanks again for the help. I'm going to experiment with it and see what they look like. I'm shooting at 21mbps.

I tried downloading 3 different youtube downloaders and nothing is showing up in firefox to download...still searching. :)

You should get 3 or 4 clickable links on the RHS info column in the Youtube page. Normally under the embed code and the choices are flv, 3GP, Mp4, HQ and HD.

Try disabling popups.

I don't have the popups being disabled...still not working...I'll have to mess with it later...thanks for the help,

Instead of the HMC40 I bought a used V1U... don't ask why, but one thing is certain: HDV edits much simpler and in realtime, compared to AVCHD. Here is are some shots from my recent walk in Torrey Pines park, in San Diego. Shot in 24A, Vegas handles it automagically, no explicit pulldown removal is needed. Panning stutters more than it should because I set stabilization to Hard and forgot to turn it off

EDIT: It is a pity that the V1U has no built-in mic. I can see that many other pro cams, especially shoulder mount, do not have built-in mic, instead they use mono shotgun. What, pros do not shoot with stereo sound? How about getting ambient sound while shooting main track onto a shotgun or lav? I don't get it.

It is nice that the HMC40 as well as the HMC150 have built-in mics.

Nice footage.
Nope.. Pro's don't use stereo sound. All shoulder mount cams have no built in mic... all need shotguns/external audio to work. A sure sign of "consumer" footage is wide stereo sound.
I didn't know this about the V1U... Kinda like it more now.

Well, how do pros get ambient stereo? With a separate field recorder and mixing in post? Too much hassle to me. Or they are using two mono mics?

Yep.. separate field recorder, or two mono mics. Just look at any full size Betacam/DV/HD camera and you will NEVER see stereo mic in the specs. Always 2 or 4 audio channels with mono shotgun used.
The other channels are usually used by separate sound person mixing ambient mics, wireless lavs... etc.

Keep vid works like a charm...thanks. How do I figure out what the settings are of the file I'm downloading, though?

So what do you do if you are one man's band? BTW, the Pannies can mix built-in stereo mic with the XLR inputs, and the updated XH-A1S can too (the original XH-A1 could not).

Which models? My HMC150 can not mix xlr and builtin mics into the same tracks at the same time. (I can put one builtin mic in one track and an xlr input on another.)

As far as I remember, there are no builtin mics on the shoulder mount cams.

Well, that is what I meant. AFAIK, the built-in mic on the original XH-A1 is turned off when anything is connected to an XLR input.

Here's a video I just completed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4utezpM6s8

It was filmed using the HMC40 in PH720/60p with the following setup:

- Panasonic Wide Angle .7x Lens
- No ND Filters
- Rode Videomic with Dead Cat for Sound
- Matthews M25 Tripod
- OIS On
- Slow Motion is 25% of normal speed
- Edited with Adobe Premier CS4 on a Macbook Pro 17"
- Outputted using Mainconcept H.264 Youtube HD preset, but changed the fps to 59.94 from 24 fps.
- +1 Chroma

Any pointers, comments, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ravencr - As far as youtube goes I've had better results encoding to MP4 rather than H.264. Don't know why but my content looked better than if I encoded to H.264 first. This was going from HDV > MP4. Your footage looks great but you may want to try that. Also places like Blip.tv and Vimeo allow you to upload and stream the original H.264 version, this will always look better than flash but you then may run into the whole "Must have the latest version of Quicktime" problem with PC users :( I think the latest version of flash player can actually play H.264 natively. Also, you gotta realize that to play youtube HD content you need a pretty powerful computer, netbook, forget it unless you have an accelerator card. Ok, enough encoding ramblings for now ......

I'm pretty impressed with the H.264 personally and it's outputted as a mp4. I'll have to check Premier to see how I can do it differently.

Here's a quick vid shot at 720/60p on my bogen 561B monopod, and full auto, no filters.

I noticed some flickering when I watched this link. It seems the light drops and increases over and over, although subtly. Maybe this is a youtube quirk? It does look good overall, though. It seems much cleaner than other hi-def video uploaded to youtube, even when watching it in SD. Also looks like fun!
