Is this any good or do I go Tascam/Zoom route?

Panasonic AG-MYA30G - XLR Microphone Adapter and Mount for Panasonic AG-HMC40

Thanks

The MYA30G adapter works fine and gives you phantom power, individual controls, and a pad on the cam. External recorders have their place, but for basic audio for video, recording to cam has a lot of merit. Synching separate audio tracks without time code can be done, but does add a level of hassle.

If you were going external, look at the Tascam products, which IMHO are better.

I can't give you precise comparisons. AVCHD is a compressed format and you can look that up. As far as the cam goes, my opinion is that the audio from the MYA30G mounted on a HMC40 is as good as a DVX100A, which is decent for a vid cam. It is a significant improvement over not having it.

Is it as good as a dedicated recorder running at high bit rates; no. Is it good enough for "audio for video" within the class of the cam; yes.

Depends what you are doing, and you didn't specify.
