HMC40 Audio question

I'm looking at buying the HMC40 without the XLR mic input at this stage.

How do people here using the camera record audio? What microphone(s) do you recommend?

Thanks.

I've connected shotguns and hard wired lavaliers directly - as well as through a mixer. As is the case with most built in camera mics... just say 'no'.

The AT875 is a nice short capsule shotgun that stays out of frame, even with a WA adapter in place on the lens.

Not much choice out there for 3.5mm minijack. I used a Rode Videomic during the short time I had my HMC40. It does the job.

I'd reccommend a good XLR mic (rode ntg series or AT875r) and the line matching transformer cable until you can afford a good xlr adapter (preferably one with a preamp or phantom). I'm using a ntg-2 with my consumer panasonic gs500 with good results. I've used the little transformer cable with 50ft of xlr before with no side effects (your results may vary)

I don't have the HMC40 yet, but I did do a test with another video camera to see how the audio might sound using different connections.

(1) On camera mike is OK, but not great.

(2) Low cost XLR to 1/8" adapter cable to XLR mike is OK, but seems a bit off.

(3) BeachTek DXA-4S XLR Adapter ($150) in stereo mode with a single XLR mike connected is weird, the sound is distorted.

(4) BeachTek DXA-4S XLR Adapter in mono mode with a single XLR mike connected is the best sound.
