HMC40 and Lens Filter/Lens Protection

Just received my HMC40 last week... so far I'm very impressed.

I want to buy a lens filter to accomplish all of these objectives:

1) protect the camera lens
2) not reduce the light (and have to open up the lens further to have to compensate)
3) be able to keep the lens hood on the camera with the lens filter attached.

Any suggests to accomplish all these three items?

For outdoor work, you may want to get a ND .9 (3 stops ND). This will help keep the iris open around F2.8 -->F8 for the sharpest possible image. If you close the iris down beyond F8, diffraction will reduce the sharpness.

For indoors, a clear UV filter will help protect the lens and not loose light.

So I will get a clear UV filter, that's OK, but will it fit on the HMC40 with the lens hood still in place?

For what you described a UV Filter fits the bill. I have a UV Filter (I leave it on almost all the time), also polarizing filter and 3 different ND filters.

When I am outside I mostly end up with an ND filter, a polarizing filter or sometimes both. The UV filter is for inside and for protection. I can easily put two filters on and the lens hood fits fine (I have not tried, but I am sure I could get three on)
