HMC151E nightmare

I have had this camera for almost a year, but i don't seem to get a clean footage from this camera. I have even tried using Barry Greens settings from the DVD which came with the HMC book, but i dont seem to be getting rid of noise from my footage. The footage looks ok in camera and NLE, but i once open the files in my 27 inch mac it is all noise, what am i doing wrong?

If the footage looks good from the camera to the TV, but looks bad when played on the computer, then you have a computer playback problem and not a camera problem.

We've had reports that Quicktime X and VLC both add lots of nasty noise to the footage. Try using a different player (like Quicktime 7) and see if it cleans up the issue.

Again, if it looks good when played out from the camera to your TV, then your footage is good. If it's noisy when played back from the camera to the TV, then the problem is in the camera.

If the only place it looks bad is on the computer, then you've got an issue with your computer.

Just to make sure, if it's not what Barry mentioned (which there's a good chance it is) - Do you do a black balance before each shoot and when switching to totally different resolutions/framerates? I've seen a ton of older threads with Panny's where this has been the problem.

The footage is bad wherever i play it unless i view it in a tiny screen or view window, on TV it is still bad, i can as well say that whenever the view size is expanded it is bad. I'm shooting in 720/50P because i have to conform the footage to a GH2 EU model, so i cannot switch around to different resolutions. I always do the W/B balance.
Barry, you suggested somewhere that the shutter speed should be at 1/50 for the lighted rooms and i have kept it at that. I tried using the MTS files with the Toast, same problem.

The obvious next issue is your camera settings. My guess is that you've got the detail turned up and it's enhancing the noise.

I'll copy a post I wrote on April 23rd below...

"Detail" and "V.Detail" have nothing to do with resolution -- they're in-camera edge contrast enhancement settings. I think Barry Green's book talks about this, I don't remember. For sharpening images from your HMC150 do it in post -- don't leave it up to the "tiny little computer" in the camera that ends up enhancing noise and/or other artifacts. The setting that actually does destroy real detail is "coring."

Understanding the above, try this:

F5
Detail -3
V Detail -7
Detail Coring +2
Chroma Level -1
Chroma Phase 0
Master Ped -2
DRS Off
Gamma Cine-Like V
Matrix Norm2
Skin Tone DTL Off

Always do the black balance when you switch recording modes (like switching between 1080/24p and 720/60p). Do that and you should end up with something pleasing out of the camera and low noise. If you want to crush your blacks and/or create something that looks similar to a Canon HDSLR, then do the above but take the master pedestal down to -7 or -10.

Some people, including me, take both the detail and v.detail to -7 -- and sharpen in post.

Also, if you've got the DRS on -- that could entirely be the culprit. Turn it off. Always.

And, if you're in CINE-D, that's another noise generating setting.

I've Posted this many times so I won't go into it in detail here.

For cleaner footage especially in the blacks:

  • Black Balance every time you power on the camera.
  • After making any changes to detail/coring etc., Adjust your black level (master ped) using the WFM with the iris closed. Line should get "cleaner" on the WFM as you drop Master ped till it makes no diff.
  • All else fails try a system reset - somewhere in the menu. Can't remember exactly what it is called.

General noise is usually detail to high and coring to low and the above. Yes, DRS can make things worse but the above helps with that as well, as long as you drop the master ped using the WFM after adding DRS in the scene file. DRS 1 is not to bad, DRS3 is pretty noisy in the blacks.
