HMC151 is 50Hz/60Hz switchable!

After some staff of Panasonic told us, that it was a typo in the brochure LINK and the HPX170 / 171 was NOT 50Hz / 60 Hz switchable, we have now at least the confirmation for the HMC151 together with a working preproduction model ...

A Panasonic Rep tells in this interview with a german video magazine, that the HMC151 is "of course 50Hz / 60Hz switchable" - so after that, why should the HPX170 / 171 NOT be switchable?

WORKING HMC151 in interview

But as release date for the HMC151, the rep says "end of the year"... I had autumn in mind.... ??!!

Interesting... but, let's note, it's a different model number. In Europe don't they typically have the same model number? HVX200 here, HVX200E there?

Reason I ask, is because JVC had the HD100E, and the HD101E, and the difference (as I remember) was that the HD101E had firewire input enabled. So will you guys have an HMC150E and an HMC151E (difference being that the 151 would be switchable?) Or are all the models meant to be 151's?

I hope what you're saying is right and that they've decided to make them all switchable, but as a computer programmer I'm trained to look for loopholes...

It'd say the HMC151E will be the same as the HMC150.

The reason the 151 might have an E after it could be because there will be a 151 for asia, and oceania, which might each have their own letter after them (en/j?)

Panasonic has said from the start that the HMC150 was going to be switchable..

Yeah, but that's not how they traditionally number things. The last digit is separated out by geographic territory.

The US gets a 0 and a "P" (hence HVX200P)
Europe gets a 0 and an "E" (hence HVX200E)
Southeast Asia gets a 2 (hence HVX202)
Japan gets a 5 (hence HPX555)

So if it's HMC151E in Europe, that's something new (or so it seems). Might be much ado about nothing, or it might herald that there's actually something different about it. I wonder if Europe will get a 150E and a 151E, like JVC did with the HD100 and HD101?

USA:
HVX200
DVX100
HPX500
HMC150
HPX170
HVX200 A

Europe:

HVX200
DVX100
HPX500
HMC151 (!)
HPX171 (!)
HVX201 AE (!)

So it looks like with the HVX201AE, it's "en vogue" to put the 1 as last digit for european models...

The PAL version has never been the same as the NTSC version... the actual HVX is not 50Hz / 60 Hz switchable - so this may both NOT be the reason for the "1" at the end...

I seriously guess that it's just an actual "vogue" to put it since the HVX201A... because the HVX200 didn't have it and had the SAME differences as the actual model has, so I think it's not about any kind of differences whether to put it or not.

And back to topic: the only reason I see why NOT to make the HPX170 / HPX171 switchable would be, because it's DVCPRO-HD and not AVCHD as the HMC150 is... so it might be more difficult to involve all the different formats / framerates into one single camera than it is the case for that "simple" AVCHD camera.

And BTW: the man in the interview says, that the price for the HMC151 will be

"surprisingly low"

so this might mean: lower than the list price for a DVX100 (its official antecessor) - anything other would not be "surprising" IMHO....

Panasonic has said from the start that the HMC150 was going to be switchable..

and so says the brochure for the HPX170... which turned out to be "still in discussion" or in other words a typo...

For me it was the working HMC151 that makes it 99% definitive for that camera but for the HPX 170 / 171 it is still absolutely unsure AFAIK.

Panasonic reps down here are hoping the HMC150 will be around DVX price.. however its apparently all up to japan to decide.

Yea your correct barry, the HPX170 will be an HPX172..
