HMC150/Vegas Pro 8

Been dumping DVX footage into Vegas for years.
Is this new camera compatible with my NLE?

It should.

I had CS3 and was going to CS4 but I read that many people were having issues with AVCHD.

I believe most of those problems were worked out with an update for CS4.

I don't know about 8.1, but I can confirm that 8.0c has issues with 60p. It works fine with 24p and 30p and I believe that it will even do 60p as long as you are not trying to do slowmotion work with it. But slowing down 60p to 24p or 30p will not work. I would be curious about the 8.1 version if anyone has some input.

What I'm asking is; does Vegas 8 handle footage from the HVC150 as easily as SD footage from my DVX100aE? Or should I anticipate jumping through hoops to get raw footage onto the timeline for editing? If so I will NOT buy the camera, as I am not ready to learn a new NLE. Anybody using VP8 explain their personal experience with the workflow.

I've been working with both 720 30p and 1080 30p in Vegas 8.0c without jumping through hoops...
Drops into the timeline and edits fine....
I haven't tried 60p like the post above, so I don't know about that.

You can drop it directly in. Just be aware it takes WAY more processing power than SD footage, and quite a bit more than HDV as well. I'd suggest downloading some raw clips and see how well it performs for you.

For reference, I have a computer with two gigs of ram with a CPU roughly equivalent to a P4 3.0 ghz single core, and the FPS on 720p24 clips usually starts in the high teens and drops into 5-6 FPS range when watching it at half resolution preview. I haven't tried a 1080p clip, but it's probably a slide show, like 1 or 2 FPS.

It jerks and jumps all over the place for me. Both in the timeline, and even if I render it out. Using 8.0c.
