Just getting around to starting to play with some video files. I don't know wtf I am doing so bare with me.
In this post of my stupidity I want to know about slow motion. I shot 720p60 then put into final cut and did APPLE+J to change speed one clip at 50% slowed down and the other at 40%.
I showed a friend of mine who is a professional movie maker and he said it just doesnt look right, like not slow enough.
Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong?
thanks

They are just short 10 second clips:
40% http://vimeo.com/5633538
50% http://vimeo.com/5633515

If you want it slower then just slow it down more... i saw the clips and they seem about right for the 50 & 40 % speed...

don't you reach a point where it starts getting a bad quality of slo mo, I was told to not go slower than 50%?

Thats why you want to shoot in 720/60p.

This mode allows you to get better quality. I slow down to 30%, but try to go as low as you can/want and see what it looks like. And what you like!

Ya..these are 720 60...so the consensus is these clips look fine, or 'correct' for slo mo?....now I just have to work on 'HOW' to shoot haha

Maybe this has something to do with it?

so I shoot in 720/60 and the sequence settings I have in FCP are: apple prores hq 24p 1920x1080

and when I drop in the clips I get a popup saying 'the sequence settings should match your clips, would you like to change now?"

what do I say to that, yes or no? yes will make that clip go from 60p to 24p? (to match the settings of the timeline/sequence)

so confusing when u first get going with all this.
THanks all

I'm not a FCP user, so I don't know how much I can help. First thing is that you're taking a 720p file and putting in in a 1080p sequence setting. Isn't there a setting for prores hq 720/24p?

And yes, from what I know....cinema tools is what you need for conforming 60p footage to 24p for that fluid look. I think it's that simple. Right FCP guys?

Philip Blooms little tutorial:

Should help you out. I have a quick little tutorial for Vegas users on how to achieve the fluid "overcranking" from 60p if anybody is interested.

Makes sense about my 1080 setting and my 720p clips, but when I drop them in it gives me that warning and 'fixes' it for me if I click 'yes' I think.

Still can't believe how crisp and smooth your skate video is.

ok, learned a lot today....but riddle me this

what is difference between pulling the 60p clips into cinema tools and bringing em down to 30/24p and just doing a 40%/50% pulldown via the SPEED dialog in FCP?

AND....
here is another clip I put up of my kid, bare with me, just shooting nonsense to learn how all this video stuff works, but this was shot 720/60p, 500th shutter, converted in cinema tools to 24p, then compressed in 'squared5' with a h264 setting....
so, does the slow mo look 'correct' and why does the compression look like crap?

I don't know and I couldn't tell ya. Have you tried both? Do they both work? If so, just pick the one that makes you the most comfortable.

The slowmo appears to be smooth a fluid, but I don't know about the compression. First, that clip isn't HD. I looked at the other similar clip you had posted in "HD" and (sorry) it looked horrible. I wish I knew enough about FCP to help you. All I've ever known is Vegas. :nads:

Ya, as for the 'HD', I dont know what I am doing wrong, but the compressed files look atrocious. Back to drawing board.

The correct way is doing it on Cinema Tools, but the FCP method works great!...

How do you export/compress your final clips?

I export the file to a qt movie using the highest settings then bring it into squared5 and use a setting that clearly is not working well...small file size but looks like crap. It was a setting recommended by a friend but is obviously wrong.

Use Cinema Tools to convert to true slo-mo. Works like a charm and takes about four seconds. You can apply it to a clip that is already in your timeline and it will "expand" it out to true slo-mo (60fps). Simply taking the clip straight from the card into FCP and slowing it with Control/J creates ghost frames. If you don't have Cinema Tools, go get it.

What I do: When you export your project, do it in the highest settings possible. Put it into a Quicktime movie. When that is finished, throw it into CS4 Encoder and resize there. 640x360 is what I use. It will spit out a beautiful picture with a small file size. When I say small.. A one minute clip will be 20MB. Prior to Encoder it would be pushing 1GB.
