Hi Guys,

I have enjoyed reading this forum for sometime, and find it very informative, so it's about time I joined to pick some you clever and more experienced brains.

I have a HMC-150 and is looking for a DSLR companion for video shooting (as a second camera), I been thinking of either a Canon EOS550/7D or EOS5D-MKII or even Panasonic GH1. I quite like the GH1, because it does offer a better autofocus and AVCHD, but regardless I am looking for a unit that works well with my workflow as well colour balance close to the HMC150 without making too many adjustments for my wedding work.

So anyone have any suggestions or experiences, they can share.

Thanks.
Tom

Hands down a GH1 will best match a hmc150... Plus you get a lot more features typical of a true video camera with the GH1.

My vote goes to the GH1 as well. However, I considered going DSLR like you, but ended up deciding on an HMC40. For me, that was the perfect companion. If you're sold on getting a DSLR though, GH1.

Personally I was looking at the 40 myself too... I shoot in low light far to often to use the 40. The GH1 allows for very fast primes that can easily compensate for low light situations.

With the 40 you are going to get more video camera features and feel - but at the cost of interchangeable lenses. Most of the time my B or C cameras are just for image anyway, so I didn't need most of the advantages a 40 offers. Plus, not that I am jumping on the DOF train, but its amazing what good lenses can do for your production.

Have you looked much at the Canon t2i? It's pretty cheap and looks great, I've got my eye on it.

I've been looking at the GH1 for a while, but something keeps holding me back and I can't quite put my finger on it.

I'm hoping that Nikon pull their finger out and make a 1080p DSLR soon because I don't want to have to change back to Canon again if I can help it. Glass costs too much to keep swapping.

Exact, I have the same problem. I been holding out for Nikon for sometime, and have whole bunch of their lenses. I like the EOS550D/Rebel T2i option, as it is better value then the GH1 and like the SD format over the 7D. I'm maybe get that to play around with first and see, what Nikon will do.

I just have to figure out if they both support the same 25 frames per sec recording.

Cheers
Tom

I got a T2i simply because of the price. This last sketch we did, we used the 150 on the indoor shots, then switch to T2i for the rooftop stuff in the middle. I wanted it to have a different look, but with the aperture closed down on the T2i (didn't have an ND filter) it looked more similar than I would have thought.

So that's not a very good example, the T2i stuff is graded to be more saturated, etc. Working on a web series this weekend. Shooting mainly on an HVX, and going to try some T2i shots in the mix. Should be good, especially shooting flat or semi-flat.

i recently bought hmc150 as a companion to my GH1. But I am still trying to find the best settings to match each other. What's your experience
MadHMC150?
