HMC sound setting/camera reset?

Greetings all,

I hope someone can point me in a new direction with this problem! I have an HMC40 with the Panasonic XLR adaptor. After using the camera for about a year, I grew tired of my lack of good space and vowed to stop producing video until I had constructed some sort of a studio. It took about 6 months, but once I had my garage studio outfitted, I set up my camera and went to work. I quickly discovered audio problems. I tried every mic I owned but all had a hum in the background. I discovered that I could hear the hum even when no mics were attached to the XLR adaptor and even when the adaptor was not connected. I have another XLR adaptor that works through the front mic jack and it produce an identical result. Even when using the built-in mic, when I could get the room quiet enough, I could hear the hum. When I change to playback mode, no hum. Unless, of course, I playback video that I just recorded...

During the 6 months of down time the camera was safe and protected. I'm certain no physical damage could have taken place. The only thing I can think of that happened to the camera during that time is when I got it out after finally got a copy of The HMC Book. I got out the camera and played with a variety of settings on it.

Is it possible that a setting somewhere is the cause of the hum, or do I need to start shopping for another camera? Is there such a thing as a "master reset" of the camera so I can return it to its original factory settings? I've tried every sound setting I can find but it's made no difference.

For now I am using the camera but recording sound on a digital recorder and replacing the sound in FCP. It works fine and it's no bigger pain than doing any other multi cam clip (a drag on my poor little Mac no matter what), but that's not a good solution for shooting on-the-street interviews and such. I can't stop and mic everyone, but I can't stand the hum either, so for now I'm just doing studio work.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!
