HMC plays GH1 recordings (but...)

Hey everyone,

today I've put some AVCHD 720p recordings from my GH1 into my HMC and guess what, it lets me browse the clips and play each recording. So the AVCHD replay in the HMC seems pretty versatile.

There is something weird though, it does not show any timecode information (timecode stays at 0). So I guess that the timecode is stored additionally to the regular AVCHD data somewhere.

The HMC150 and HMC40 offer the superset of all recording modes available in current Panasonic consumer/pro cams. I would be surprised if the HMC150 did not play 720p AVCHD. If any, AVCHD was supposed to provide better compatibility than HDV, not worse one.

It's not just the recording modes. AVCHD is a specification on one hand, but it leaves much room for implementation specific details on the other. Just because camera A records AVCHD doesn't mean camera B does let you play the clips from camera A even if the recording modes are the same. The HMC could easily detect if the recordings were made with the HMC or with another camera and refuse to play them, especially as there is no timecode information saved by the GH1.

It would be interesting to see whether the HMC can play AVCHD recordings from a Sony camera. Maybe it's even possible to create correctly authored AVCHD content with your computer and play it back on the HMC. That makes up a nice feature.

Cranky can you explain that a little better? HDV is a tape so if I put it in any HDV camera or deck it should playback, I would never even expect a problem. In fact we used to use a sony z1u to shoot and to save a little money we bought a canon hv30 to use as a deck. so I dont understand why anything HDV would not be compatible with other HDV products.

Unless I completely misunderstood what you where saying in the first place.

In fact HDV is just an MPEG-2 transport stream stored on tape. AVCHD is much more than just a collection of transport streams and so it's much easier to cause incompatibilities ;)

Of course you wouldn't EXPECT a problem, because it sounds like a format should be compatible, right? But in fact it isn't. JVC HDV tapes can't be played in any Canon camera, and only 30P JVC HDV can be played back in Sony cameras/decks (and not digitized, only displayed). No Sony or Canon HDV can play in any JVC camera or deck (unless the newest models support it? This used to be true, not 110% sure if it still is). And, Canon 24F/30F used to be incompatible/unplayable in any Sony product. Recently Sony has introduced new decks that resolved that compatibility.

FYI,

My HMC150 will play any video shot with my AVCHD Canon HF100 and HF11. And the Canons will play any 1080 video shot on the 150.

Explain this one somebody, I have a Panasonic Veira in the bedroom, it has an SDHC card slot in it and the manual states it can play back AVCHD clips from an AVCHD camcorder. I get an error message "can't read from card" It won't, it can't understand the card structure, but when I stick a card from the HMC into the PS3 on my Sony Bravia in our living room, it plays back perfectly, is this weird or what?

Was the Viera perhaps from before PH mode was out? Try formatting a card and recording in HE mode and see if the TV recognizes that. If it doesn't... I don't know...

I have no doubt Barry this will be the issue. The manual states it will play back AVCHD footage from a Panny AVCHD camcorder and our Viera model was out before the HMC thus not compatible with the PH mode.

Been up the snow this weekend so during the week I'll try with some HE stuff and let you know how it goes.
