HMC & plane

Hi,

I have to take a fly soon and I would like to know how you guys carry your stuff.

I have some basics equipments which goes along with my HMC (mic, glidecam without the vest, tripod) and i'd like it safe and not lost ! I heard about so many things lost in planes and i worry a bit about this since i will need my camera a few hours after i land and i can't have it lost for days or anything like that.

I know the baggage size allowed in the cabin's plane of the company i will fly, which is enough to put an HMC into.
But i wonder if i better buy a locked hard case and put all my stuff in it and then into the baggage hold of the plane OR put my stuff in a little hard case which will goes into the baggage hold as well but the HMC into a special little bag which will fit the camera and the size required in the cabin's plane and so no risk to get it lost.

What are your experiences about planes and your video camera ? Thanks for sharing

It's the batteries that will freak out the PSA. Check those or have them separate and present them in a Ziploc. Keep your camera with you. The Glidecam should be fine. If they try to take the cam, cry like a baby and reach out for it -- they'll get you through nice and fast.

I wouldn't fly out of the country with mine unless the job justified the risk, although you're in France...You'd know better than me.

I've been all over the world with my cameras and never had a problem. I just carry on the camera and batteries, charger, tape, ect so I can shoot right away after landing. Then tripod and big stuff goes in hard travel cases. This way saved me a few years ago when I went to Chile shooting a travel TV show and they lost my luggage for 3 days but we could still get work done, just all hand held.

Back when I shot 16mm film convincing people who dont speak english not to put your film through the xray was tough. But I still never had any major issues.

Great ! thank you guys
Nathan, why would i know better than you ? I never took a fly actually you know... haha

I didn't think about the X-ray thing... but i do not need to worry for the Hmc and the x-ray i guess.
Well that's already great experiences/tips and i'll take my camera and the essentials stuff with me in the cabin after have read that.

Thanks and if anyone have anything to add resulting from his own experience, do not hesitate, it's really helpful.

I've always wondered about this but haven't had to deal with that situation yet. Definitely never let the hmc get out of your eyesight.

:bath:

yeh just carry all the essentials that you need to shoot. when i had to travel (with my dvx) i took the dvx, 2 batteries, wireless kit, tapes, cleanign kit, shotgun mic and windshield, all appropriate connections. tripod and other stuff were checked in.

I've had my batteries test positive as explosives (or maybe it was narcotics). Anyway, it took forever, but they let us through.

I recently flew across the country for a job, flying on both regional and larger aircraft. All of my video gear was carried on in a Petrol PCUB-1N backpack. It held my cam, batteries, 2 on camera lights with batteries, 2 lavs and cables, shotgun mic, cards, 2 small collapsible reflectors - plus 2 small stands and a monopod (in outside pockets and straps).

The backpack got a little heavy when making the long walk to connecting flights, but it fit in the overhead compartments. Getting through security checkpoints was not much of an issue as long as all items were either placed in bins or open and available for inspection.

I wouldn't check the camera under any circumstances. Keep it with you in your carry-on. Getting your luggage damaged/lost even once is too much of a headache, especially if you have all your gear in there.

And they will freak out about strange looking batteries. Every time I have flown with my batteries for my light they have inspected them pretty thoroughly. It adds a good 10 minutes to the checkout process.
