HMC 21mbps vs 24mbps AVCHD format

someone can shed some light on the topic would be great.

HMC150 boast of a 21mbps AVCHD PH mode which is awesome etc etc etc...

but then Canon's new little compact HD video cam VIXIA HF S100 little guys are doing 24mbps also in AVCHD format.

what's the dealio here?

The HMC records 24mbps as well. I think what you are mixing up are pure video and video + audio combined data rates...

I wouldn't get worked up about the difference between Panny's "up to 24mbps (21mbps avg)" and Canon's 24mbps...

1) The HMC has many pro features that make comparison kinda not useful, from better glass to manual controls to image tweak-ability and of course, "mojo"

2) The HMCs lower resolution probably compresses more efficiently than the Canon!

Totally agree.

The question shouldn't be how the HMC's codec compares to the Canon's. It should be whether 21/24mbps is sufficient for the HMC150. From my experience, it is plenty, I haven't seen any issues with footage from this camera which would be improved by throwing more bits into the codec (the only exception being that more colour depth would be nice, like AVC Intra but without the intra).

I fact, I have found that the 17mbps mode looks great, so 21mbps is probably overkill in some situations.

I'm sure theres some CMOS funk involved with this. The sharper image is great but that rolling shutter and other factors make shooting with these small cheap cams quite unusable.

I love to take photos with my iphone and man I can get some funky hall of mirrors type looks.

the 24Mbps bitrate on the canon avchd consumer camcorders means that 24Mbps is the peak recording bitrate, with the minimum around 21Mbps... this is variable bitrate recording, you can see the bitrate changing in the nero showtime media player.

i suspect that the hmc150 bitrate does the same thing(?), panasonic is just quoting the mimimum bitrate, instead of the peak.

i personally wouldn't shoot at anything less than the max bitrate.

He's the right the Canon's are VBR as well, it's just that Canon labels it at the top of it's VBR spec(24mbs) to wow people(because they're consumers) while Panasonic labels it at the low end of it's VBR(21mbs), I only realized this recently when analizing footage from the canon hf s10 and the 150.

Just to be precise - Panasonic advertises the average (21mbps) AND max... they almost always phrase it as something like "21mbps avg. (24mbps max)"

Yeah but the point is Canon doesn't advertise that theirs is variable as well. Probably every form after 17mbs is gonna be vbr.
