HMC 150-Lens Hood-where to buy?

For those of you who don't know, the stock Lens Hood that comes on the HMC 150 is flimsy and cheap, unlike the hard plastic version on the DVX 100. My camera took a minor tumble onto the grass last week and it cracked instantly and is done for.
Does anyone know where I can get one? Panasonic is asking way too much for a replacement so if anyone has an extra or good recommendations on a similar replacement that would be much appreciated. Thanks
Ben

Perhaps you could go down to a local metal shop and get them to make one.

give them some dimensions and i'm sure they could paint it black.

Now that could be a really cool, if potentially more expensive option. I would look at it.

I have had lots of custom mechanical parts custom fabricated. My local fabricator could easily (not inexpensively) model and reproduce the lens hood via CNC mill out of a solid block of aluminum.

I could then laser or CNC etch a company name of whatever into the top or sides of the hood. Powdercoat flat black & done.

Th only issues I see are the locking mechanism depends on the compression of some of the plastic to lock (work around would be a Canon or JVC style thumb locking screw), and you would lose the shock adsorption of the hood and the camera would break rather than the hood if you drop it.

Or, you could buy a cheap matte box from B&H for only $350.

He was joking. A hood must be less strong than the camera/threads. Think about car bumpers and absorbing of impact. Sagedrummer lost his camera's hood but saved the camera itself. If I were him I would buy another stock hood from Panasonic simply because it protected the camera so well.

I heard the hmc is the unofficial replacement and they look near enough identical.

And yes i was joking about getting a hood made out of metal, if you do then then try and make it "crushable", like cranky said, it does provide some sort of protection.

With a plastic hood it would simply crack the hood and not break the camera. with a really strong metal hood, it could potentially crack the main camera body.

You don't have to use metal. You could have one cut from plastic, it's easy enough. But my view may be biased towards fabricatibng one due to 30 years experience in aerospace manufacturing.

Plastic machines well too. I have a buddy who runs a rotational mold fab plant who is just looking for something to do. They are dead slow. Unfortunately that wont work for this.

Wow those are not cheap, still best to go with the hood built for that cam and definitely cheaper than had there been damage to the actual lens!

Bad news, Panasonic has discontinued the part for some reason, the only way you can have it replaced is by sending it in for service which will run you at least $300. The part only cost $21.50 plus shipping.

i wonder, can one modify a sony hood (like the fx1) to fit on the hmc? that would look pretty awesome

Ressurrecting this thread to see if anyone has done this or knows if there's a chance this can work. (I''ve been a lurker here for some time and now that I finally upgraded to an HMC150 decided it was time to come aboard.)

I just sold my Sony FX7 and never did measure the OD of the lens body to see the sizing so I don't know if that works, but I'm assuming that hood size won't since the lens is a 62 mm.

Also does anyone know of some DVX100 hoods available. I called Spec-comm and they're looking into it for me, but I'm looking for any possible alternatives if they don't work out.
