Hi all!
I'm Marc, a Philadelphia based musician.
I've been recording music for the past 15+ years and now I'm looking to branch out and make music videos.
I've come here to learn as much as a I can about lighting and everything else I'm missing out on!

I have very limited experience with Final Cut and my Canon Vixia r800 but I like to make time-lapse art and use some very simple reverse techniques to tell my story.
So far I have 2 soft boxes, 2 key lights, a ring light, some color gels and a white folding background at my disposal. I'm having a lot of fun!

Here is my best video to date: https://youtu.be/DJAslbUPKaE

I look forward to asking lots of questions and getting very confused but I hope you all will be patient with me!

For a musician the important thing is that lighting comes in two forms, lighting for illumination and lighting for mood. The lighting in a mood video will have shadows, hotspots, darkness, and features that set the music in context. Lighting for a cooking video is mood-less, and has even, soft and shadowless techniques. Sometimes a black background works really well because it vanishes.

This one is a good example. Face light, haze and shot in a warehouse with pipe and drape background.

Thanks. I'm learning to use these color gels at the moment, and really enjoying the process.

The link you posted is a nice performance but I don't think that's my aesthetic. In addition I'm not going to record live performances.

My intent to is to make each video a little studio photography shoot with lots of fast edits and time-lapse art.
I like the idea of picking a very small color palette and exploring that in each video.

That's actually very clever - sadly, it's something I don't have the imagination to make. I'd like too see more though.

Thanks!
I'm very limited with my filmmaking skills but I'm having fun!
I'm trying to make every music video a little art project.
