Hit By A Car

I need to shoot and edit a sequence of a guy getting hit by a car and I'm just wondering if anyone here has ever shot and edited something like this before. I've heard of people doing it frame by frame and some people have said to film 2 separate shots and splice them together. Which method is quickest and easiest with a decent enough result, and how exactly is it done?

Thanks!

I would have the actor stand just to the side of the car for the side shot. Have the driver follow through the motions of the hit, whether it is a braking hit or an out of control high speed hit. Then I'd rig up a dummy that would be struck by the car and use that for multiple angles. Quick, hard cuts make the crash more dramatic and realistic feeling.

I have seen this done before where a teenager flops on the hood of the car after his legs are hit.
They shot it at a side view and it looks really good.
it would look even better if you shot it with multi angles like a view from the passenger side door looking over the side view mirror.

I've worked on two projects where we hit someone with a car. We tried two methods, each requiring multiple passes that were then comped together in Final Cut.

The first time (which you can see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z65WjP3k5Rk at 5:50) the first pass we did was the person getting hit by the car just running through the scene (past where he would have been hit). The second pass we did was having the car just drive straight through the scene. The third pass, we had the guy who got hit just jump in the air trying to essentially mime the motion of getting hit. We then took that final pass and scrubbed through it til we found a few frames that looked good. Essentially a car hit in this case is only 2 or 3 frames, so we pretty much comped the first two passes together and the moment of the hit, we stopped the first pass and put in the few frames that looked right.

The second time (which can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RnuJdnSeFc at about 1:40) was a lot more intense. Similar to the first time we shot one pass where the character just runs through the scene and another pass where the car just drives through the scene. Then, for a third pass, we brought the car back in and had it drive through insanely slow (we are talking just inching along) and we actually had our actress act out getting hit and flopping down on the hood. Then again it was on to the creative comping, scrubbing through that final pass to find the few frames that matched up with how fast the car was moving through frame in the second pass.

I hope this helps.

There's an intersection in our community that's pretty dangerous for pedestrians. I could lock off and just wait for a couple of hours. How much?

if you search in the after effects forum, a couple of months ago someone posted a great you tube clip + a step-by-step on how to do it.

I would say the post was probably a little less than a year ago (give or take). It's on the DVXUser server somewhere.
