Highly portable rope based dolly

I've been sketching up ideas for a highly portable rope based dolly. One that you can take high into the mountains or remote areas. The track would be rope and you would fasten it to solid objects on either ends (vehicles, trees, etc)

Each end would be a length of square tubing which would be the solid anchor point for the ends. The tubing would have a variety of mounting methods including ability to bolt it, use hooks, or straps to securely attach it to a solid object. THere would be a hook for using a come along to tighening the line as tight as possible and large wing nuts to hold it in place once tight.

It woudl need to butt snug up against the solid objects to avoid the rope from swaying or twisting.

For the rig, it would be a triangle of square tubing with a mount on each corner for tripod legs. This would allow the tripod to ride ontop of the rig. Still haven't settled on wheels, but they would likely be solid mounted grooved plastic wheels. THe slightly flexible rope would provide the shock absorbtion instead of using rubber wheels

In the center of the triangle would be some strong flat bar with a center drilled hole for mounting an under slinged camera bracket, so I can run the camera underneath the rig.

The idea behind this is, it's portable, light weight, and the track (rope) is raised off the ground so it will work in snow. Basically a cross between a cable cam and dolly.

Main concerns are how to tighten the rope and how to solid mount each end so it can't tip either way and twist. It will likely be used primarily for shorter distances, so the rope is easy to string tight, but longer distances if possible as well.

I'll be making this soon and working out the kinks, I'll be sure to post pics.

Thoughts?

you're talking about a cable cam, there are several threads here about them, including photos, and list of all items needed. one guy built a remote control one.

My only concern coincides with yours... creating a rope tight enough to mimic an actual dolly would be difficult.

Let us know what you end up doing with that problem

This is actually a cross between the two. More like tailoring a cablecam to work like a dolly.

I'm building a true cable cam too: 24v dewalt, speed controller, 300ft line, remote head, etc

You can't use "flexible rope" because as you put tension on it (you will need a lot) it will stretch. You can try something like AmSteel-12 synthetic rope which has a higher MBS than it's steel equivalent.. Basically it's same stuff that 4-wheelers use to replace their steel winching cables. However it's not cheap! The one characteristic that drew me to use it was that it does not store energy (so if it breaks you will not take someone's head or body parts off.. unlike steel cables)

For shorter runs, you might be fine as long as you have something very, very sturdy to rig it to.

A 100ft line with 6" slack to carry 40lbs will need approx 2000 lbs of tension...

You can play around with the numbers here: http://www.slacklineexpress.com/force.htm

You also mentioned bolts and have a variety of mounting points.. Just keep in mind that most bolts you find at ACE, Home Depot are only rated to few 100lbs.. So be careful with the hardware you choose... Your system is only good as it's weakest link.
