I will like to buy a Monitor to do color correction while editing on FCP Studio Apple G5, what do most people use to view their HVX 200 footage at either 720 24p or 1080 24p?

Please, I need a model number and maybe a place where i can get one from. Best monitor possible for HD footage. And would I need an AJA card for in/out put? I will like the best connection possible as well.

Thank you.

Personally, I would go with a Kona or Decklink card and a Panasonic LH1700 with or without the embedded audio option. Your other possibility is to wait for the Matrox MXO box and monitor through the Matrox to an Apple Cinema Display.

That Matrox MXO is the one I'm waiting for. And I would never buy anything from Decklink. I spoke to the president (or, at least he claimed to be the president) and he was one of the rudest people I've ever spoken to. They might make a fine product, but I wouldn't buy now just on principle.

Ouch!

And let that be a customer service lesson to all you companies out there . . .

Hey Ned,

What's better, the Kona or Matrox MXO, and should I use the 23' Cinema Display or the Panasonic LH1700 while editing... I will like the best picture possible. I just don't want to work looking at the wrong color and/or picture and realize it later once done. It's very important to me and the company that the video gets deliver looking it's best. So the difference in money is not a problem as long as I get the best product for it.

Thank you.

The Panasonic LH1700 through a Kona card. That's the best. If you want the ABSOLUTE BEST, than invest in an SDI HD capable CRT monitor, instead of the Panasonic.

-Make sure the CRT can display the 700-800 lines you Panny can register.

Nothing beats a CRT in my estimation. The only CRT's really out there now are the Sony BVM's... and they are pricey. The next best option is Decklink or Kona to the Panasonic LH1700 (or 2600) via SDI. Then there is the Decklink or Kona to Cinema Display via SDI to DVI converter, or the Matrox MXO. As far as Grant (CEO of Decklink), I find him a great guy. Sometimes at events like NAB where you have two dozen people converging on you at once, it is possible to be a little curt. Cut him some slack; he's a fine guy with a great Aussie accent.

The Sony PVM-14L5, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=262238&is=REG it's the only CRT monitor still available under $1900. What do you all think? Is this better than the Panasonic LH1700? and what else would I need to play full HD from my G5? do I still need the KONA LHe or Kona 2 or 3? Anything else.

Once again, I just need the best picture for my money while editing and color correcting.

Thank you all!

The Sony is SD, the JVC is HD. The Sony is 14 Inch, the JVC is 17 Inch. I saw HVX200 Clips on the JVC via HD Component in 720/25p. They looked absolutely awesome!
I buy one whithin the next few weeks. After my new editing system is up and running.

So, the JVC DT-V1710CG 17-Inch vs Sony PVM-14L5/1. I need help, I need the best picture! Thanks.

I have the Sony PVM-14L5/1. It does accept HD input via component and I have used it with the HVX200. Both of these monitors have the same resolution (800 lines).

When I was deciding which monitor to buy, I went with the Sony because I read in other posts that Sony is known for higher quality (picture accuracy, reliability) while JVC aims for a lower price point. For example, the PVM-14L5/1 has SMPTE-C phosphors, which are usually found in higher end monitors for accuracy.

I haven't used the JVC, so I can't compare the two directly, but I've been happy with the Sony and I'm confident that I can trust the colors I see, now and for a while into the future.

I'm also planning to buy a CC monitor. The JVC 17 inch interests me. Though I would actually want the 19 inch, it seems that it was discontinued, . If I use a Blackmagic Decklink HD Pro PCIe card, which input card would be best to buy for the monitor? I'm planning on monitoring mostly 1080 24p (23.98). Would the IF-C51SDG SDI card do the trick for best quality?

Thanks =)

I did not realize that the sony can also handle hd via component in.
I still go for the JVC. Mainly because it's 17 inch. I'd like to buy the 19 inch but it's not in production anymore. Maybe I'll find a good demo item.

IMHO it's not necessary to go with hd/sdi. hd component seems to be good enough. but that's just me.

If you are making critical color rendition decisions CRT is the only way to go.

As I said above I have a CRT monitor, so you can see that I agree with you. But I'm wondering if someday so many people will be watching on plasmas, LCDs, and projectors that it will be better to color correct based on the limited dynamic range that the end user will be able to see. Clearly, color correction for film will be on CRTs or newer technologies like SED, but for broadcast projects, when will we start to take into consideration the typical viewing equipment?

Hmmm...

Looking at the specs the Sony resolves 800 lines maximum and the JVC 900. Surely those numbers are reduced significantly when the monitors are put in 16x9 mode, right?

It looks to me like the only way to get ALL resolution is to use an LCD.

The Matrox MXO is most interesting. What is it really doing though? Correcting/converting gamma? Frame rates? It doesn't look like it converts frame rates, then again I get the feeling the product specs are a bit fluid at this point. Based on what products by Cinetal (http://www.cinetal.com/) and eCinema (http://www.ecinemasys.com/) cost, I doubt the $1000 MXO is converting frame rates. And yet, it looks very promising. Will the MXO convert an Apple or inexpensive Dell display into somehthing equal to the Panasonic LCD? I would love to know.

I have my eye on that Panasonic LCD.

Those prices doesn't include the HD SDI input boards. Add around 1500 dollars for that. That's why I mention the Panasonic LCD.
