F55: Highlights of the F5 & F55 Launch Event

There's a clip of me in there trying badly to talk with Jin Yamashita about the built in LUTs.

I will tell you he's the nicest guy, and likes very much to talk to the users of the camera he put together. As I understand it, he's the lead engineer for the F3 and 5/55.

That's horrible. Whoever thought that was a realistic setup for working was...not a shooter.

Hopefully the design of the F5/F55 signal that things will be simpler moving forward, and that this FS700(4K) will one day be referred to as 'The Last Great Frankenrig'.

I think Sony just wanted to show the FS700 can do 4k just because they said they would. I wouldn't be able to keep a stable frame because I would be laughing at my camera.

at least you could hide behind it when folks start laughing at you.

that looks like a jvc gone horribly wrong.

Haha, now that my initial chuckling has worn off I'm trying to decide whether it actually looks any sillier than frankenrigged F3s/Epics/FS100s/DSLRs?

In some ways it's kinda neater than most frankenrigs - at least all of the components sit in-line over the rails.

Looks have nothing to do with it. Having that much stuff hanging off the back of your shoulder would cause real problems for 50% of handheld work. Smacking on door frames, forget car work. etc etc.

Also that thing has only one handle for right hand? It'd twist/roll right off your shoulder if you had to move fast. Goofy to the max.

Go go gadget arms!

Man I didn't even photoshop that job...

Like I did this one:

I couldn't care less about the look. It's about function. A F3 on a rig is much more compact. ;)

My main thing is that all these Rube Goldberg setups always tend to go wonky at the worst times.

HDMI to EVF has made me swear loudly many times. I've lost frames in takes from glitches to external recorders. I'm completely over the idea of that if you need to add functionality, just slap x on it and its as good if it was built in or designed that way.

I suppose it's just me, but I do wonder if the rest of the world will eventually get fed up like I did.

It's not just you. To me.... "RIG" the last word I want to use to describe my camera. I don't want to be surprised when it works because I expected it to not work. It was not that long ago cameras were systems, meaning they were complete and ready on day one. We have gone to the world of band-aids and velcro to get the pictures we are after.

That is why I do what I do. I got sick of all the adaptations to adaptations. Handlebars instead of hand grips. Barbell counterweights. Consumer connectors. Having confidence in your gear gives your brain the time it needs to deal with the goal of getting pictures. I am very hopeful that the F5/F55 are a return to a manageable camera system that is still reasonably affordable.

To be fair, the Alexa is not really self contained either, neither is the Genesis, F35, F65 or a film camera for that matter. It has worked this far.
I agree with HDMI, which is just horrible. You need SDI. But I have never ever had a problem with an external recorder.
But yes, the frankenrigs do get ridiculous. But nothing wrong with a shoulder pad and handle bars. Arricams have been that way for decades.

Definitely count me as fed up. Hopefully the last few years of ridiculous camera rigs will fade from our
memories as more cameras like the f5/55 come out. As for rigs coming apart at the worst time I had the
frustrating experience of shooting aerials with a dslr and the vibrations from the chopper loosened the rig
until it became unusable. After twenty years of shooting with cameras designed for shooting I just can't understand
how people work with these things. I also think when your camera is frustrating to use it gets in the road of the creative
process.
