Highlights from two Napa Valley weddings

I never realized there were so many wedding shooters and editors on the boards! I'm inspired to share a couple of highlight reels from weddings I've shot this season. My style is very, very simple. Let me know what you think.

Pardon the amateurish site - I am not a web designer but threw it together last minute for a bride to be able to view these two Highlights. It will most likely be replaced, but honestly I don't really think I need it as I work almost exclusively with a photographer whose site features my work. And his web designer is pretty good :)

Nice videos! What did you shoot with, and what settings? (60i, 30P, 24P?)

Really a beautiful setting for the Sarah video.

Hey Brandon, thanks for watching! Both were DVX100a at 30p.

As to the pretty setting, the mustard was in full bloom that weekend and that location was just outside the bridal suite.
I drove by a week later and the whole field had been mowed. Sometimes you just get lucky!

very nice my man
i shoot with a 100a as well. I've used the 100b and I think it's crap compared to the 100a.

something about the look of the 100a just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

what now?

I mean don't get me wrong.. I have the 100a, but still.. the b version is clearly better..

anyways..
I liked the "sarah" one best.
The shots outside were stunning.. great colors and of course a pretty lady:P

but one thing I noticed and didn't like that much was the jump cuts you did when they're holding eachother outside and kissing..
Not a good way to jump cut.. and especially in this setting.. so I would probably fix that up.. but otherwise.. great song, great colors and good editing:)

Yeah, love it. The look of the dvx is soft and organic and, IMO, perfect for weddings. I can see myself using this camera for weddings for a long, long time.

Hey now! None of that here :) In the words of Brian Regan, "They're both good."

Thanks for watching! It's funny you say that about the jump cut. I thought about it a lot while editing and obviously could have done something different...but I really like it! I'll go back and watch it again (not that it'll do any good since I'm unable to look at it objectively any more after having seen it several hundred times) and see if I feel inspired to change it. Thanks for the thought!

Footage looks really great. It's really great when you get to shoot at a great loaction. It gets hard when it's bland receptions halls.

I love using jump cuts, but yeah, those ones are jarring since they are the same framing, just the couple moving.

But, again, looks great. I just started a thread about using the DVX for event work. Please stop over and add what you have found to work best, and worst, or whatever.

Yes, location is a HUGE part of the equation. I am very lucky to be where I am. I'm starting to think there's no such thing as a bland wedding setting in this area. :)

Alright, that's two against the jump cut. I was trying to convey a sort of flickery, start-stop Super 8 feel to that sequence. It's more clear at some points than others - specifically a couple shots later when the camera is pointed up at her through the yellow flowers. I'll take another look at it. An artbeats type effect of the film rolling past the shutter at each jump cut would make it abundantly clear, but I still think - as I did when I was editing this - that it might be overkill.

Cool idea for a thread Shibuya, I checked it out and I'll try to think of something worthwhile to add.

Great Job Jared. Beautiful shots on the Sarah video. I too, am curious about the light you used for the indoor footage. It looked really nice. Great work on both videos.

As best as it can get!
Yes, the locations really are lovely, but the imagery is perfectly executed, good framing, contrast, sharpness, play with DoF, nice colors (with help from sunny CA:happy:)
May I ask how much you aprox. charge for a video like the two samples?
Where I live people happily pay hundrets (or thousands) of Euros for a photographer, but are cheapshooting when it comes to event videography - that´s practically why I don´t do it...

Glad you liked them, LostInSound and Bravestarr. This is the light I use, mounted to the hot shoe:

I couldn't find it on Varizoom's website just now and B & H lists it as backordered with no known arrival date. I'm not sure if it's been discontinued or what, but it's a great little light. It doesn't have a lot of throw, but the barndoors and dimmer are very handy. I also like that since it's LED's, it doesn't get hot.

Thanks for the kind words. Yes, photography commands a much price than video here as well. Those samples are from one camera 7-hour shoots. The bride and groom receive a 30 minute movie and the raw of the ceremony and toasts. This 'package' is priced in the $2000 range.

That´s a good price for both...
Thanks!

Sure thing - Quicktime settings for web output: H.264, medium-high quality and IMA 4:1 audio codec, mono, 48 kHz. I also the "Prepare for Internet Streaming" and "Fast Start - Compressed Header" options.
