highest quality workflow and yield?

Hey guys,

Ive had a little time now getting to know the new cam, and feel like I'm taking some great shoots.

My problem is the difference I'm finding between the files I look at in final cut pre-sequnce in the viewer, and post-sequnce in the canvas.

I'm shooting most of my stuff in 720 and it looks soooooooo smooth, until I drag it over to the canvas. I thought that perhaps an export to h.264 would yeild results that I'm seeing in the viewer... but to no avail.

It's not a huge difference... it's not like I'm seeing a drastic change in colours or sharpness... but I am seeing a difference in how smooth the playback is. It's smooth when played back on the camera, and even in the viewer after export, but looses something in the canvas and when exported and played on a tv!

Any help would be great! Im using final cut express, sequence is apple intermediate 1080 60i, and export is h.264 @720

Further investigation leads me to think that the easy set up only offers an apple intermediate codec 720p30, yet I'm shooting in 720p60.

Why have an option to shoot such smooth video if you cant even edit it?

Just because it's not in easy setup, doesn't mean you can't do it. Come on...

please... fill me in... what do I do? Sounds like you're a little upset that I have a question....

By the way, Im in FCE, not FCP. I dont see an option to edit the sequence settings.

I'm not upset... And I can't fill you in. I don't have FCE and I don't even own an Apple. A quick search of Google shows that FCE doesn't accept 60p video. So you'll have to convert it. It appears there is a free plug-in to do so:

Best of luck. If that doesn't work, looks like you'll have to step up to a pro level program.

Do you not have a sequence settings tab in express? I've never been on express, been on final cut pro for about 8 years. I know it's there in pro. If you plan on doing more editing I would strongly suggest upgrading. The new final cut studio just came out. Mine comes tomorrow. Sorry, but you may have to spend more money....

Yea, I've used it in Pro trying to help a friend get his Canon HF-S10 video onto the timeline transcoded to Pro-Res. Took me a few minutes to find it, but it wasn't too hard. But if FCE won't take a 60p file, and won't allow you to change sequence settings, might be time to step up.
