FS7: Highest Quality Codec for AVC-I When Rendering Out of Resolve 14 (Lite/PC)

I am working in Da Vinci Resolve 14 (lite version) on a PC and was wanting to render out AVC-I in the highest quality CODEC. By highest quality, I mean the one that would cause the least amount of recompression. I am wanting to take the graded footage into another NLE for straight editing.

I know some people working on a MAC, have the option to render out in ProRes, but on a PC, you don't have that option.

Would it be MXF OP1A > DNxHD 1080p 220 10 bit?

I have the Studio version on the way, and I'm assuming it offers better rendering options.

If anyone uses Resolve Studio on a PC, what do you render out in for highest quality?

Thank you!

If you want extreme big files you can use DNXHD, DNXHQ, if you deliver for the web just use MP4 or MOV.

I should stick to XAVC-I for editing. (and why not edit with Davinci?)

For PC you can use DNxHD. If you need higher, for an effects sequence on a frame level DPX is quite common but very large.

On PC I've also cheated before a few times and used MP4 H.264 highest quality setting and from XAVC-I originating footage it did not look bad at all. I converted the final MP4 movie project to ProRes using another computer. This is not a great way to do it, but it worked at the time.

Now I have a dual boot system where I can boot into Mac OSX or Windows.. it gives me the best of both worlds, so maybe down the road you can look into doing something like this as well if you feel you might need access to ProRes on a more regular basis.

There are apparently some addons for PC to give you ProRes but I have never tried them. Could be worth looking at too as an option.

cheers,

The last time I tried using Resolve for straight editing, I found it to be horribly sluggish, but honestly, I haven't tried it for straight editing in a while. It sounds like Black Magic wants it to be able to do everything (sound, editing, and grading). I'd love it if that to be possible, but it is probably too good to be true.

Thanks for the answers. Really appreciate it.
