EVA1: High speed on Atomos/Odyssey7q

Hey all,

I couldn't find this information online so I am seeking a little help here. I would like to ask if anyone have tried shooting high frame rate (eg. 50/100/120fps) with a base of 24/25/30fps and outputting that to an Atomos or Odyssey? Will I get the slow motion on Atomos/Odyssey as what I am getting on camera when I do slow motion capture?

A project requires a quick turn around with Prores codec on 1080.

You can overcrank like that only with cameras that are supported by the recorders.

Everything else (if it's capable) would just record regular 1080/50p and you'd have to slow it down in post yourself.
 
It doesn't work this way, and no video cameras do. Only RAW data and some specialty machine vision cameras. Otherwise, a video camera will only output in a regular SMPTE video standard frame rate, meaning 23.98p, 24p, 25p, 29.97p, 50p, or 59.94p. Anything not to those standards can be recorded internally and then played back at one of those speeds.

No (and sorta yes). Most cameras will only output "normal" frame rates(i.e: 24, 30, 60), nothing higher. What you can do is shoot slow-mo in-camera and then play it out in real-time to the external recorder. I know guys have been doing this for many years for clients that "have to have" ProRes. But then they make life hard for some of us when that producer comes to us and wants to shoot a lot of slow-mo, but to a PIX recording ProRes, then you have to try to explain what the crew was ACTUALLY doing, because the producer thought they were actually able to shoot slow-mo on the PIX with ProRes. "But I saw them do it!" "No, you really didn't." They didn't see them/pay attention to them dumping those shots out in real-time at the end of the day, which if it's just a few isn't a big deal. I went round-and-round with one producer for 15 minutes trying to explain it to him and how he was much better off ingesting the native files and transcoding them as opposed to us shooting 100+ individual pictures in a stylized set-up and playing them back out in real time. FYI: each picture with every move they wanted on each one was over 5 minutes if it had been played back in real time(we were shooting at 72 fps). We were there over 10 hours setting up and shooting. Imagine tacking on another eight plus hours playing it all back out in real time to an external recorder.
 
I think 120fps may be included in some of the SMPTE Ultra HD standards. 2160p120 just requires dual link 12G SDI outputs:

Of course there aren't really any cameras with dual 12G SDI outputs yet.

What is a little bit unfortunate is that 1080p120 is included in the HDMI standards, and some existing video recorders like the Video Devices PIX-E and Atomos Shogun/Ninja Inferno are capable of recording this format.
And even though there are a whole bunch of cameras that support 1080p120 internal recording these days, I don't know any that will output that signal over HDMI.

Well for now I have to resort in the first method of recording it through the external recorder after the shoot. Thank goodness we only had to do slow mo for less than 10 shots of less than 2 minutes. This method works for our situation now. Thank you!
 
EVA1 RAW update at end of March will allow for this if recording to RAW. One month and you'll be set. Just make sure you specifically buy SSDs required for RAW, listed on Atomos site. Hint: Not Samsung 850 Pros.
 
At BVE Atomos had the EVA-1 with BETA running Raw at 4k60p and 2k240p to ProRes giving a 10bit 422 via the 6G SDI. You can currently take 4k30p on the 6G SDI as Video and 4K60p on the HDMI.
