High Speed car chase

Actually Taxi the original from France had great car chases and it WAS a comedy. Apart from the over exposed shots at times I liked it. Maybe a little wreckless for open roads and certainly something I wouldnt attempt without stunt crews closed roads the whole nine yards. Dont want to hijack just wanted to say to inspire I really like that "be free" track even with compression.

what do you want from ussss!!! LOL oh man that was funny. kinda caught me off guard a little. Especially since I was taking it seriously at 1st. ha

video was okay. Not a big fan. Thats cool you went 120 mph, but there are so many techniques that can be used to make something fast than it is....

there was too much variation in color from scene to scene, it just make the flow a little akward... and I do agree the "What do you want from ussss" was not performed too well.

but that car looked sweet, and the sound mix was pretty good.

what other techniques could i have done for future reference?

I agree the CC was awful. I corrected one clip, through the effect in a bin, and applied that CC to every clip, mostly to drop the gamma some, and at least do something. I cut the whole movie in one 7 hour session the night before the event, this was a last minute run and gun shoot. Thanks for checking it out man.

Yeah i was going to comment on the T2 sound-score. I say get rid of it completely...and make your own soundtrack. Everything else here is original...why not go all the way? I used a side mount like that once, but was very cautious in going more than 20mph. I guess it holds up then!

go to: www.noahshulman.com

and to the CAPICU "PARA LA CALLE" video, there are a couple of clips in there with that mount.

Thanks for takin a look and yes the car mount held up at those speeds. I will check out your link.

Nice video. First I would like to see your rig. Can you post pictures of the car mount? I don't know if someone asked this already, I tried to skim all the responses before I posted.

Now for my subjective .02. Let me clear my throat:

1) The car mounted camera was nice, but the still and smooth camera didn't excite me. I would have liked to see some camera shake for excitement.

2) All dialog was cliche and hilarious, in the bad way. "What do you want from ussssssss" or "step on it grandpa" and let's not forget the classic "now that's what I am talking about!".

3) Editing could be better, but remember I am being picky to help.

Overall, you have a nice base to start refining your chase sequences to a higher level of professional quality.

Now for a completely subjective opinion: I would have not shown the "villain" driver. I found (in this short clip) he really had no point to the story. Instead of showing a cliche bald, "mr. biker" type villain, I would have been much more frightened of a mysterious and aggressive black SUV. The lack of human element in the villain and the mystery of not seeing the driver would seem very scary and menacing. Not only would the chase be exciting, but all the questions the victims are experiencing "what do you want from us?" or who is chasing them would fall onto the audience as well.

Hey prodigy, i think that is a great idea not showing the "bad guy"! The bad guy is one of my good friends who is trying to get into acting, so i hooked him up with this to get some experience.

I am glad you understood the cliche dialogue. Remember, this was for teenagers, thats what the youth pastors wanted.

Im in cleveland with an HVX and some other tools now, we might have to colaborate on a project in spring.

Definitely reckless. But that road is where alot of people race.

Heres a trans am rig:

Watch these films for their well-executed chases.

Jade
Bullitt
The Rock
The French Connection
Ronin
Run, Lola Run

Quick cuts, long lenses to compress space, very low angles and other ground effects shots contribute significantly toward selling the appearance of speed. Shutter can also be used to much better effect than undercranking.

If you were, or were trying to suggest, that your characters were going a buck-twenty... well, it didn't look like it at all. You were too wide throughout the sequence - it made everything look slower than it might have been in actuality.

I worked on The Rock Hummer chase, which was shot with lots of long-lens cheat, shaky-cam and ground-effects as I mentioned before. There are plenty of better of chases out there, but this one illustrates just about every concept that can be used toward getting what I think you were going for.

Above all, it's never a good idea to shoot without precision drivers under a stunt coordinator on a closed course. Be safe and keep your speeds at the absolute minimum required to deliver the effect.

yeah seriously that looked like a rural but residential area too. untrained amature actors trying to act while doing 120mph? pretty f****ing stupid. and they're youth ministers, way to go!!!!

The chase was great. I never see car mounts on this board. Cheers to you for gorilla shooting it. I could tell you did and it made it more exciting. I was once chased for my life and I was reminded of it. The music kept detaching me though.

I love that part of T2 to, but I think the music does a disservice to the chase (I keep looking for motorcycles and big rigs). Someone mentioned above that it was shot a bit wide - this is really genius advice that got me thinking. But that's much further down a road you've gone down a ways very nicely. I applaud it.

edit: The bottom line is no one should ever re-use music from a hit movie - though there are exceptions and rules:

A. ok to re-use Monkey Man (The Rolling Stones)
B. ok to re-use Baba O'Reilly (The Who)
C. forbidden: anything Tarantino (even good songs he's corrupted)
D. forbidden: the banging blocks from movies like "The Usual Suspects"
E: forbidden: any type of rock after the Smashing Pumpkins broke up
E: forbidden: any type of rap after 1994(ish)

Maybe you don't know how movies are made johnny cola, the youth pastors weren't really driving (duh!) They showed up in the afternoon and we shot ONE scene of them driving down the strip at 45mph "acting" like they were driving that frast.

I sorry if that offends you that the real driver and I did reach 120 on the 2-car pass, but thats not very uncommon for us.

It's not a car chase scene unless one of the pursuit cars crashes through a caravan (mobile home)!

note to self, never go to cleveland ohio and ride my bike on the roads, i might die. seriouly, people who drive way to fast are the worst. They put lives in danger that do not need to be put in danger.
