FS5: High speed capabilities

I'm considering renting an FS5 but wanted to see if anyone knows the high speed capabilities of the camera. Can it record 120fps continuously to SD cards or just in bursts like the FS700?

High speed capabilities

I'm considering renting an FS7mkii but wanted to see if anyone knows the high speed capabilities of the camera. Can it record 120fps continuously to SD cards or just in bursts like the FS700?

Slow & Quick Motion Function, its continuous:

XAVC-I mode 3840 x 2160: 1 to 60 frames (59.94p, 50p, 29.97p, 23.98p, 25p)
XAVC-I mode 1920 x 1080: 1 to 180 frames (59.94p, 29.97p, 23.98p)
XAVC-I mode 1920 x 1080: 1 to 150 frames (50p, 25p)
XAVC-L mode 3840 x 2160: 1 to 60 frames (59.94p, 50p, 29.97p, 23.98p, 25p)
XAVC-L mode 1920 x 1080: 1 to 120 frames (59.94p, 50p, 29.97p, 23.98p, 25p)

It can record 120fps continuously to it's SD card but only if the high frame rate upgrade has been purchased.
This from newsshooter.com;

"Continuous 120fps high speed recording has now been enabled when the recording format is set to XAVC HD. Unlike the previous Super Slow Motion recording, video can now be recorded continously up until the remaining capacity of the media runs out. Unfortunately the continuous high speed recording can only be done if you have purchased the CBKZ-FS5HFR which costs $499US. The recordings can be captured in 4K XAVC-Long 4:2:0 8-bit, or in HD XAVC 4:2:2 10-bit."

It is also a lower bit rate than standard speed.

http://philipbloom.net/blog/sonyfs5100fps/ is a review and explanation of it.

Actually, the FS7M2 can't record anything to SD cards. It only records on XQD cards.

And with the FS7, external RAW recording requires the XDCA-FS7 back. It can record 4K via HDMI or HD via SDI without the back. The $500 option you mention is for FS5

Maybe he's thinking of the FS5, which uses SD cards?

You're probably right, seeing as he started a thread for FS5 as well.

But I've come to not mind the limitations of the "burst" mode for recording HFR. It sounds bad at first, but when you realize that 8 seconds of shooting at 120 fps on the FS5 equals a 60 second clip, that ain't so bad. How often can you use a 60 second clip? HFR chews up card capacity pretty fast so even on camera like my FS7 and F55 that can do continuous HFR I have learned to anticipate the action and only start rolling at just the right moment. Obviously it is better to have the option to be able to roll for as long as you want to, but all I'm saying is that in real-world shooting the burst mode isn't so bad as it sounds.

But the bottom line is that the FS7 is superior to the FS5 for HFR even if you pay to upgrade the FS5 due to the better XAVC-I codec.

"Burst" modes are something I have really wanted everyone to start doing.

I always only need slow-motion for a few seconds, and it would be amazing to see higher frame rates at higher resolutions from existing or new cameras.

There's always a reason why not - whether it's hardware or corporate - but who wouldn't want high-quality (no shortcuts) 4K/240p just for a few seconds?

I'd rather pay more for the camera/internal recording than having to do it via an external recorder.

Thanks for the info

I typically prefer burst mode for real-world scenarios, but this time shooting a sporting event and wanting to have continuous recording throughout, but have the option to have high speed shots for some parts, so my plan is to shoot it all at 120fps, keep the high speed selects, speed up the rest of it to real time and dump the excess footage.

And only needing it in HD, the 4K option doesn't really change much for me. Thanks for all the input!

By external RAW recording you essentially mean the back is needed for the camera to send out a feed of the raw signal to any external device? I was looking at external recorders but also running into the XDCA-FS7 back issue - the rental houses I'm looking at have the camera but the backs are rented out.

FYI, Shogun Inferno just got a firmware (8.4) allowing 2K@240 fps from those cameras' RAW output!

Any idea on roughly how long a U60 battery would run on this camera if recording XAVC-I mode (1920 x 1080) @ 120fps?

A BP-U60 provides 55 Watt hours https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/526424-REG/Sony_BP_U60_BP_U60_Lithium_Ion_Battery.html?sts=pi

The FS7 draws approx. 19 W (while recording XAVC-I QFHD 59.94p).

55 / 19 = 2.9 hours while recording. Longer if you you are in standby mode and shooting at slower frame rates but I would always error on the side of caution.

I use this battery on my FS5 and it's rated 96 watt hours, it's great as it has a power tap port you can use to run an external monitor off if you like, https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/930325-REG/series_7_ex_l96ud_95wh_14_8_hdv_battery_4.html

There is also a v-mount system that many prefer for its capacity and simplicity.

FS5 without the upgrade can only run in burst mode. With the upgrade it is continuous to SD cards, but to correct some misinformation, there is NO loss in quality.

The FS5 does not record in XAVC-I mode. Only in 4:2:2 XAVC-L mode. I have never found the XAVC-L mode to be a problem in HD. It looks great. You can go on the Sony site and gets all the specs and they are accurate.
