High Soeed flicker reduction

Hi there,

Has anyone come across any decent plugins for reducing the flicker on high speed footage? I just shot a low budget music video, all 240fps and the director is complaining about (minor!) flicker from my tungsten lights.

Nice trick there from Bloom. I've also seen recommended on these boards to speed up the clip in the timeline by ~.1% and the NLE's frame blending will do a good job of minimizing flicker. Haven't tried this yet myself, but it may be a little less unwieldy than managing a 2nd track in the timeline.

I just tried both of these on a clip and neither worked. Still get flicker with the "speed up by .1%" method and PB's "offset by a frame and lower opacity" didn't work because my motion was so fast that I could see the ghosting of being offset by a frame.

Doesn't work for me either because of the fast motion in my shots. The best solution I have found so far is the free Krokodove deflicker plugin for eyeon's Fusion. Unfortunately, it only runs in Fusion. The correct solution is to get lights that don't flicker. :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Is the flicker over your entire shot? i.e. all lights in the scene flickering equally.

If so, you might be able to fix it manually in After Effects. The flicker should be pretty reliable (a 4-frame cycle if you shot 240fps in a 60Hz country) so you could keyframe an exposure correction to compensate as the image gets darker, and then duplicate that out for the length of the clip.

Labor intensive and may not remove it 100% but could be better than nothing?

That's an option if you have a budget - basically any LED fixture is fine (they're all continuous) and there's some really nice new ones coming out: the Cineo Tru colour HS and Kino Celeb are nice soft lights. I used the Zylight F8 recently and that's really punchy, especially for a battery operated light. If you need something seriously punchy you can get a Aaydn Tech ECO Punch - they're equivalent to a 2.5K HMI. But these are all new fixtures so very few places stock them (I don't know anyone in the UK with a Punch).

However, if you're on a tight budget you gotta go with what you got!

all of the finishing tools have deflicker on tap, it's been a common issue since the dawn of filmstock, Flame/Mystika/DS/Pablo have native deflicker, Foundry offers a pretty good deflicker inside Furnace Core, Mamba offers Mystika's native fixer, and when the going gets really tough i turn to Fusion as noted above... it's proven to be very very good on very very hard shots (Arri535 running off speed shooting a sunset with an actor walking through - fill lights from HMI's also off speed... and going to cinemascope film prints)

Generally true at full power, but beware of cheaper dimmable LED fixtures– They usually use PWM (basically, controlled flickering) to achieve dimmer output and less expensive ones may cycle slow enough to show up in high speed shots.
