High Sierras....

I just got back from a 3-day location scouting trip up to the Sierras. I brought along the HVX and gave it a go. I have to admit I don't know how to use it very well (everything was set to auto), and I had no dolly or steadicam of any kind, so all the shots are static. :(

Actually I don't even have a decent tripod I can pan with. It's so crummy you can see the camera actually shaking in the wind!

Still, the locations were so gorgeous all I had to do is point the HVX in the right direction. :)

I cranked the saturation full blast, but didn't mess with much else. The opening shot is 1fps timelapse.

Wow Tom

That was really nice; thanks for taking us there ! (Where did I read recently where someone called the HVX HD laughable ? That was super nice!)

man you got to do mount whitney and beyond if you have 4days at least. there are spots that are incredible.

Guys, I'm having a great deal of trouble encoding to Quicktime. I use Premiere Pro with Aspect HD, and the export options for Quicktime are just pathetic. I'm rendering an MOV right now with H264, and it's rendering at less than one frame per second! Incredibly slow. At this rate it will take more than 2 hours, and I have a Pentium D 950.

I wonder if I should pay to get Quicktime Pro? Can I use QT pro to encode directly? I've got to figure something out here.

Yes, you can use QT Pro to Export as a .mov or whatever you want. I think the $30 is worth it because the program pretty much pays for itself over time.

i never did the front side idid the back side from onion valley. one week of hard assed hiking 70lb back packs, that was the hardest hike i ever did but man the awesome beauty we saw was like no other. we came down the front while people were hiking up. now that looked steep for a first day climb i didn't envy those people.

Man I have to disagree with everyone here and say that footage looks bad for a 6 thousand dollar camera, especially HD. I assume you shot it in HD - but it looks bad. There is a tremendous amount of purple fringing in the highlights where the sky meets the trees. Even the DVX isn't that bad. I've heard the HVX is worse in low light conditions but this should be really good footage. I would re-consider if you want to keep it - maybe think about returning it. Honestly, I am not trying to be harsh but I am sure you would rather hear the truth.

I would expect MUCH more than that. I saw better footage from the now discontinued AG-DVC80. This is a six thousand dollar camera - if I paid THAT much I would be very disappointed in that footage.

Just my 2 cents.

Tom,
I don't know what he is talking about. Purple fringing? What were your settings? Must be something with his monitor.

The WMV coded probably has a lot to do with digital dan's opinion.
The footage would look a lot better in h264 or quicktime.

Maybe Tom can post some full resolution jpg stills, the compression format is the weakest link in the presentation via the web...

Here are some caps from the Cineform intermediate, captured via control-I in Media Player.

Keep in mind, as I mentioned before, I don't know how to use this camera at all. I'm a director, not a DP. All the settings were "auto" and there were no filters (beside ND) or anything.
