High School Gear Dilema..Suggestions my learned colleagues?

So my friend, who happens to be my client as well asked a favour (favor for those south of the Canadian border) and I am not in a position to answer with confidence.
A highschool he is involved with (Private School) wants to equip itself with cameras and editing gear so the students can make media and tv.
I have suggested they go with iMacs since they are one piece and come with all the software that is needed to edit and burn and so on.
I shoot with AVCAM from Panasonic and the SD card technology is great but not simple. Tape is a pain. Hard Drive cameras?
Any other gear suggestions and in particular brands that are affordable and durable would be appreciated.
Thnks

Card-based may be a pain... but if/when a card wears out you simply get a new one. What about a camera with an internal HD? What do you do when that drive craps out?

HMC40 may be a camera of choice. Get the XLR adapters.

And as a basic sound kit: Sound Devices MixPre, PortaBrace case for the MixPre, the NTG-2 kit from DVCreators, Sony headphones, and an ENG snake (2 XLR, one headphone return).

Definitely go with a set of iMacs, a bunch of external drives (or better yet a media server if you have someone who can set that up) and some HMC40s. Yes, it might not be simple, but that's what is needed to learn to do it... very applicable experience for the kids too!
