High Definition

ok this may sound like a dumb question and really doesn't have anything to do with the DVX but JVC's new High def cam only has one ccd if I'm correct and I don't see how it can capture true high def. images or even ones better looking than that of the dvx. seeing how it only has one ccd
could someone clear this up for me. thanks :-*

Re:  High Definition

Re:  High Definition

As a standard definition camera, it's no better than JVC's other 1-CCD cameras.

But it does capture 1080i (HD) fairly well, and the pictures are arguably better because of that.

I say "arguably" because you'll get quite a bit of argument over it.  But its resolution *is* higher than the DVX's.

Whether or not the color, etc., ultimately matches up is another question.

Re:  High Definition

Re:  High Definition

You have more than double the vertical resolution from SD to HD, yes.

Re:  High Definition

Re:  High Definition

Yep, but MPEG compression makes it practically unusable for post (because of compression concatenation).

Re:  High Definition

I've never used it, but I've heard you can sayt the JVC would be the first home video HD camera. It would be the average "Uncle Joe" camcorder of ten years from now, if you know what I mean. The image isn't *great*, but it's sharp as hell...

Theoreticly Hell is not sharp, due to hot air distortions, smog , viporations and dust from burning humans.

May have been true once upon a time, but not any longer. Editing MPEG-2 is as simple as dropping the file in the timeline, edit however you want (on any frame) and then print the file back out. It's more computation-intensive for the computer, but it's no different for the user than editing DV is.

Well, they'd like you to think that.

But I don't think it is.

Reason why is, in video mode, it shoots 1280 x 720 (which is, of course, 16:9 HD). But in still-photo mode, it shoots 1280 x 960. 1280 x 960 is 4:3.

I think the CCD in there is 4:3, and they just sample a smaller patch of it to make the 16:9 HD frame.

Notice if you read JVC's literature carefully, it never says that it has a 16:9-shaped CCD.

Well, not necessarily. There are two resolutions certified by the ATSC as "high definition": 1280 x 720 (which has a 50% higher vertical resolution from SD) and 1920 x 1080 (which is, as you say, more than double the SD res).

(interesting side note: the HD Sony CineAlta shoots 1920 x 1080, but it doesn't record that res -- it records 1440 x 1080, which is the same resolution as the HDV specification calls for).

But, as far as pixel count goes, HD is much higher than SD. 1280 x 720 has almost 3x as many pixels as standard-def, and 1440 x 1080 has four and a half times as many pixels. So HD is dramatically higher resolution than SD, much moreso than you'd think from a simple 50% more vertical lines (or 100% more even).

Re:  High Definition

high def schmigh def.. that cam bites my rear.(the jvc) thats all i have to say.  its like putting a big race boat engine in a canoe. it has one good thing they try to sell it on, but other than that its a piece of junk. what good is power wihout control? and whats the point of having a sappy looking image in high def? first give me the great image(ala dvx!) then give me the same or better imagery in a higher resolution.(ala varicam!) i dont want a high def webcam.

side note as barry says hd makes a big difference in rez. alot of that has to do with the fact that its not as compressed for one, and the higher bit rate conversions, and sampling that are done. like the cine alta 950 is a 4:4:4 full bandwith cam!  as compared to the above mentioned junk peice which is not nearly a full bandwith cam for any aspect of its operation, and then compresses to mpg2.. - this cam is basically a ploy to try and net in un-savy consumers who are into the new buzz terms, and think that the new "high def" cam is the sweetest thing since sliced bread. as far as proffesional use goes, its a heap. well all imho. oh well ... rant over.
