Hide/Disable Focus Point Square in Liveview?

I've only now had the time to unbox my D5200. I've taken some test shots and have read the oh so confusing manual.

I'm finding one aspect of the camera very bothersome, and I hope there is a workaround... but I certainly haven't been able to find it. :(

It seems that the autofocus point square is always displayed in liveview. It doesn't matter if the Focus Mode is set to AF-S, AF-F or MF, nor does it matter what the AF-Area Mode is set to. The autofocus point square is always there. I can move the autofocus point square around by using the Multi Selector or re-center it by pressing OK. But I can't find a way to hide it. And pressing the info button does not toggle the square off.

I find it extremely annoying having a red or green square superimposed on the screen while I'm trying to frame, so I hope there is a solution.

What is especially frustrating is that the square is there even when the camera is set to MF and the lens is set to M. Yes that's correct, when the everything is set to manual focus, the autofocus point square is still displayed. It is even displayed when a manual focus only lens is attached to the camera! WTF?

Any help on this will be much appreciated!! Thank you so very much!!

The best solution I can think of is just sliding it away to the lower left/right corner, where it doesn't bother me so much, but then the zoom-in for accurate focus will be in the lower left/right corner..

Thanks for replying stokstad. After reading your post and the manual some more, I've come to realize that the control over the zooming area that the square provides does it give a use in manual focus mode. So now I understand why it can be useful even with a manual lens attached or the camera set to manual focus. What I think is really bad is that it can't be hidden. :(

And thanks for suggesting the workaround as well as its drawbacks.

I'm really surprised that people aren't complaining about this. As it seems like a firmware fix would be very doable.

Actually it did not bother me until you mentioned it, now I stare at that square all the time! :)
The only real workaround right now is probably to have an external monitor, which should get a clean feed.

I am happy that Nikon atleast did not include this square in the final image!
