FS7: Hi Speed refresher

I have a high speed shoot with my FS7 (120fps) in a few days and oddly enough I haven't shot very much of it , so I just wanted to double check a few things and ask a few questions.
My understanding is that there is some image degradation and I'm wondering what i can do to minimize it.
I assume get a good solid exposure especially if shooting Slog, but I have a couple of questions.

- Will it be any cleaner to shoot in Slog 2 or Hypergamma's rather than Slog3?

- Is Center Scan any cleaner due to less line skipping?

- Can I Record to the Odyssey 7Q+ and get better results?

- Pro Res with the XDCA an option ( how fast will that go?)

Anything else i should know?

One thing to think about is it will eat the light.. I try to keep to a 180 degree shutter too.. so depending on your shot.. if your inside you may need lights.. or more than you have.. on the f5/55 ,and I presume fs7..if your shooting Slog no Luts on the SDI out to monitor etc.. but most monitors have LUTs now anyway.. your card won't last very long either.. may need extras depending what your shooting.. shoot a quick test shot and play back.. there could be stuff flickering away you won't see in the EVF.. if your in 50Hz world I would shoot 100 1/250th to be on some sort of safe side.. centre crop will keep your OLPF the same as shooting "normal" mode.. full 2K.. leaves you open to some moire as the OLPF is for 4K.. if you have brick work etc ,tight patterns .. so far Ive never actually had any problems shooting HFR in 2k Full mode .. when I didnt want to be centre crop.. I don't think it line skips but clusters pixels .. could be wrong there ..

A good pushed exposure, use the built in noise reduction, shoot at 180 degrees, beware that some artefacts will appear.

For many things it works great but if you pixel peep it will look ugly many times.

Thanks guys and thanks for a great test Morgan. My reading of that is that cropped HFR is better .
but a few questions:

- Why 180 degrees? Why not shutter off for an extra stop of light?

- What about Slog 2 vs Slog 3?

- Is the Odyssey cleaner? and can you get HFR with only a single SDI cable?

You can go faster than 180 degrees, to sharpen the image or create strobe for dramatic effect, both can be useful, but going slower, particularly slower than 240 degrees can introduce ghosting. You might get away with it on the odd shot, but more than likely you will regret it.

Yes, single cable out of the XDCA RAW out into the Odyssey. Not sure it’s cleaner - it’s a more robust signal in part of the range, not so much in other areas. Use with caution is my advice.

Would that ghosting be worse at high speed than at normal speeds? I've often used 360 at 24 or 30 fps and no problems. Offhand I would think it might be better at high speed but that's off the top of my head.

Does it have to be RAW out of FS7 for HFR on the Odyssey? I don't want to mess with 12bit RAW.

Best to keep 180.. IMHO.. just looks better.. but if no shutter 24/30 doesn't worry you.. then its down to taste I guess.. interviews yes you can get away with it as not much movement... but if you want the option of ramping from normal to slow you will need to shoot 180 or that will look bad for sure..

Somethings can look horrid, somethings not so much. It depends on the movement within the frame. Best avoided IMHO.

Yes. And that is why I advise caution, the 12 bit is a bit dodgy. Frankly, I gave up with using the Odyssey/XDCA for HFR. I just stick to shooting XAVC-I, usually keeping 100FPS as my max, occasionally going to 120FPS if there is enough bokeh/blur to hide the artefacts.

The thing is the FS7 is what it is in HFR.

You can do youtube/face book but its not really good enough for higher end broadcast/cinema.

Lots of fun at the airshow (crop mode 300*2) (the first couple of shots are OOF, the bipane spin is not) https://vimeo.com/273347902
You may note for or such a video content is king - blagged gopro, EX1, FS7 HFR - who cares about the quality - tell the story.

My early FS7 HFR stuff - again - not great quality .. but engaging and popular.. https://vimeo.com/118043613

My reel opens with two phantom shots - proper grown up HFR. https://vimeo.com/323633787

Last week I did a bike/puddles shoot and I just told them they would just never get the look unless they rented a proper HFR camera.

I have a different opinion. I think HFR from the FS7 generally looks excellent and I have no qualms about using it. But I wouldn't shoot at 120 fps, I'd shoot at 180 fps. Faster is always better! :-)

Super slow motion is a special effect and for that one can get away with much that isn't in perfect artefact free form.

I have a very specific situation,.
Music videoi and they want to shoot at 96,100 or 120 . So i wants the best quality i can for them .

Thanks for all the great replies.

I would do some test shots. If you light good and stay away from to many straight lines and patterns I think you be good. The 150fps I've shot with FS7 looked good in the final delivery.

A little off topic, but does anyone know how to set the FS5 shutter to 180 degrees in super slomo (120 or 240fps)? I can change the shutter SPEED but not the angle...

Double the frame rate is 180 degrees shutter.. eg 25p /1/50th 30p /1/60th ..its most likely a menu setting.. shutter - angle or speed.. Lenny .. so I guess your shooting indoors ?.. check the lighting level.. you will be losing 2 stops or more .. and I would shoot a quick test for sure.. practical fluorescent lights will flicker as some frame rates/shutter speeds ..
