I cannot for the life of me get XP to communicate with the HVX.
Windows is using a driver for the camera dated from 2001???
I've loaded the P2 software etc that came on the CD with the camera....but when I hook up the camera via firewire (on 2 vio laptops and a AMD 64 box) I get "Device failed to start".

Am I missing a camera driver??

How are the guys using edius talking/streaming via firewire?

Streaming works via firewire just fine, no driver was necessary.

To use "PC MODE" you do need a driver, but you must not use 1394 Device mode on a Windows system. It just won't work. Only use USB Device with a Windows system.

PC folks, don't give up hope. Stream 1394 for now, but MXF development is coming quickly. Matrox Axio was demoing native editing of P2 and XDCAM MXF files (not in 24pN mode yet). Current release of AxioUtils is 2.0, but 2.5 (in beta) was demoed at NAB and is slated for late Summer 2006 release.

Axio has gone from beta of version 1.0 at NAB 2005 to beta version 2.5 at NAB 2006. That's aggressive development, and they DO listen to their user base.

10-bit uncompressed 720/1080, HDV, DVCPro25/50, DVCProHD 100Mb and now MXF....all native, all RT (until hardware limits are exceeded). Very impressive. One of the top editing solutions right now, and perhaps THE top if you factor in features vs. cost.

Of course, that's only my own selfish pandering he-who-works-on-a-dumb-little-box opinion. :)

What is all the PC problem about?

You can hook a second drive to the camera while shooting for your archive via 1394, then when you output from camera to computer you use the USB port, THE FIREWIRE TO COMPUTER CONNECTION IS FOR MAC ONLY. Check the manual, it shows how to set the port, and it's a snap. Then, simply copy the MXF files to any drive (Create a folder called "Avid MediaFiles", then under that a subfolder called "MXF" then under that a folder called "1".) Copy to that last "1" folder, and Avid will find and index it the next time you start up. Really, nothing could be easier than managing these files on a PC with Avid. (Or probably FCP too, I wouldn't know...)

yes I know this. What if people want to stream over firewire with avid, or edius???

I'm beta testing some pc streaming software over firewire....most of the problem is you should have service pack 2 when using the hvx.(as I learned)

FCP steams perfect over firewire...guess I got spoiled by the ease fo use.
