Hey doods im buying a whole new editing station. g5 mac, fcp, and a previewing ntsc monitor. but i need a tapedeck to import my footy. Ive been looking at some mini dv ones but they are around 700-1200 bucks. Im thinkin about just spending a couple hundred on a mini dv panasonic handycam and use that as my tape deck. Does anyone know if a tapedeck would be better? Is there any real difference?

A tape deck will last longer and be more responsive. If you are doing a lot of capturing, and a lot of jogging and shuttling, then a dekc is a better option - it will also give you better connectors for monitoring.

However a camera will give you the exact same result. - thoguh the resonse times will be slower and it will most likly break sooner - but it's mcuh cheaper too.

yes.. a deck is nice cause it sits on your desk and your preview monitor hooks into it and it never needs to leave. The FF/RW is wayy faster and the heads are better so you dont get as many dropout issues. Decks are also usually NTSC/PAL switchable.

I had used the 100B for transfer of my first 10-15 hours of footage and recently explored deck options. While I'd love to spend the money on a dedicated deck (I eventually will, just not soon) I marched over to BestBuy and got a Panasonic GS35. It was about $260 out the door and is a nice little camera. I use it mostly for transfering footage (quick enough for me. I dont do any shuttling with taped footage, just full tape transfer) but I also use it as a B camera for behind the scenes footage. (Deep in pre-prod on a decent size production.)

When I bought it, I didnt expect to use tha camera at all, but it has been a nice bonus. Sure a deck will last longer, but if this camera dies, assuming it's not warranty covered - which it should be - I can still buy two more before I hit the price of a cheap deck.

Just my thinking behind the solution.

I was looking at the DSR-11 but the Sony GVD-1000 Mini DV VCR may be a nice option Hmmm...
