Here's why I'm not selling the AF100

Yeah, I've got an FS700 on order but have no plans to sell the AF100 - especially after shooting this last evening. Kinda happy with the results.
Regards,
Scott

edit 1: Shot mostly with Nikon 80-200 f2.8 @ 60fps and 30 fps plus a few scenes with the Tokina 11-16 and Tokina 28-80.

edit 2: Shot from my knees in 4 locations within 100 yards of each other on a circular course. Two different races are pictured, both pro men and pro women over a 2 hr. time span. Edited/graded in FCP-X assisted by waveform monitor.

In 18 months the AF100 has earned me beaucoup bucks and the ROI is off the charts, the same as my HVX200, which I still own and are tools that I know well and trust. I'll be using the same Nikon/Tokina/Zeiss lenses when I start shooting with the FS700.

???

So what exactly did the AF100 technically allow you to do with this project? I seriously don't see anything done here that could have not been done on so many other cameras...

ps. Footage looks good

He already owns it, knows it, and it's probably paid for itself, so, nuff said. Very much how I feel about our ol HVX200... why bother selling.

Except I see nothing there that I couldn't do with so many other cameras... Really not sold on the Af-100 at all.
Well, then you said it yourself. You say that any other camera can do this means that if you have the AF100, it will look and feel like any other camera. Even the Zacuto shootout reveals that they are all capable. I think that more important than the image is the feel of the camera in YOUR hands and how it responds to the way you work and shoot. Or to me it's more important. We all want a good image, but the camera should also feel right at your fingertips.

This is where the AF100 shines for me. It has all the features built in. That is the real reason I keep telling my self to keep it. I have cameras that make a more pleasing image to me, but they each have missing luxuries like ND's, waveform, SDI, XLR and good sound. If my project calls for all of those items, I like knowing I have a machine with that all built in. Especially when I think of what the camera costs, or how long ago I paid it off and now every time I use it and receive a check, it makes me money. Could it be a better camera? Of course! But that will be said about the FS700 and every other camera.

The HVX200/170 was a very popular camera. Guys that came from those easily transitioned into the AF100. They feel alike in both image and build. It's just the AF100 is cleaner and you can get cine shallow DOF. After rigging out a Hdslr and seeing some of the monsters people have made, the AF100 fits that in a nice little package. That was their goal and Panasonic achieved that. Plop a Gh2 in that system and you have a great and rather small footprint to run with, and still doesn't eat your wallet. Plus, I have not run into a lens that can not mount to the AF100. The sensor is big enough and I quite like the look and feel of the DOF with M4/3's. Plus, it's easier to work with while also easy to calculate it's difference if using an S35 cam along side it.

While not the best camera out there, but for the price it's a little all in one workhorse that can make a great image. So far I'm keeping mine as well.

I notice the blownout highlights are white, not the yellow I'm used to seeing with camcorders in this price range. Looks good.

Very nice...I guess any camera can deliver if you know how to drive it properly, why I like the AF101 bang per buck performance wise even full 1080p at 50/60fps for that price.

Back to the shoot, how did you you keep getting ahead of the pack..motorbike..circular route ?

I echo snp's sentiments. The AF-100 is the bread and butter of my company. Clients love the look we get with it and it paid for itself on the first project we did with it and I was one of the first to receive the camera so that tells you a bit about it's ROI. I look forward to every shoot we do with this camera.

Most of us AF owners have already paid for the camera and selling it today meen getting very little cash so better keep it and shoot some more. I also love the way it handles and as long as I don't pixel peep everything looks great. I'll get a BMDCC and I have a 5D3 but have not shoot anything with the 5D3 because it's worse than the AF to do video. Maybe I'll sell the AF after three years of use or just keep it as a low budget choice for clients on a tight budget.

Actually the AF100 is much better today than when we got it. Long time users know how to dial it in and what looks good so it's pretty safe to use this camera in all circumstances. I even feel the need for an external recorder less and less these days even when I have a Samurai at hand.

Is there a hack for the Af-100 like the Gh2?

Also isn't it true that the Af-100 can do multiple frame rates, more so 1080p 60fps being very important to me? If there is no hack for the Af-100 how does it compare IQ wise to the new 5d mark iii?

The main benefit I see of the Af-100 is using it for audio, and more traditional video camera setups. I don;t think I have seen any footage that has wowed me though and really not sure about the low light capabilities either? I'm about to buy the Gh2, but I must admit that it looks and feels very cheap but with the hack the visuals are insane. The main reason I feel like I am moving away from Canon is just the lack of detail on wide shots, I need a more capable camera.

Thanks, are you the creator for the Hacks? Also have you tried to see if you can do one for the Canon dslr market?

Sorry for the off topic, but I think it's just amazing what is being done with the Gh2.

Seems like someone is looking for the "magic bullet".

Would also be interested to see whatever footage you may have shot and posted ...that may qualify your prior comments regarding the AF100.

Seems like your post has nothing to do with mine, and if you want to see my footage you can pm me. If I were looking for the Magic Bullet I would not even be here at close to 4 in the morning learning and studying. I haver shot countless footage on a wide range of cameras. Still on a small budget I'm looking for better quality which is what people who enjoy visuals do. Gh2 hack looks better than anything I ever seen out of the Af100 and Canon dslrs, simple and plain.

You or anyone can deny it, but the truth is the truth

Vitaliy Kiselev is the creator of PTool, which is the software utility used to hack the GH2 and related Panasonic cameras. He maintains his own website at personal-view.com. I am one of a number of GH2 users who have developed firmware patches for use with PTool and published the details here at dvxuser and at Vitaliy's website. In my signature below, you'll find links to various patches that I've developed for the GH2 and GH1 cameras.

For Canon DSLR's, a different group of users has developed a firmware update called Magic Lantern. More info can be found over in the Canon forums.
