Here's something that bugs me

Re: Here's something that bugs me

You guys resurrected this old thread?!

When I started up this topic, I was really whining about the lack of precision in our usage of language, though I failed to articulate that concept properly.

But, after re-reading through all these posts, and a couple of gin-n-tonics... I give up. You win. Yep, we're all film makers. Woohoo!

Actually, it is very possible that some of my work might actually get exposed to celluloid and be projected in a theater. You see, I'm involved in a super-duper, secret, Illuminati, inner-circle DVX project, fomented on this very forum.

You didn't know that there were a shadowy Cabal of clandestine powerbrokers, laboring behind the scenes here, did you? Bwahahahahaha! (Strokes fluffy white cat)

We've even got a secret handshake, which I am not at liberty to disclose fully. Suffice to say that it involves the clicking sound the DVX makes...

Anyway, once even a single frame of my benighted labors hits the celluloid, this topic becomes irrelevent, for me at least.

Illuminati huh? I see you've been hitting the Dan Brown books along with those gin and tonics.

Re: Here's something that bugs me

the connotation of 'film' is much more respectable and brings to mind feelings that this is a 'serious' movie.

wherease 'movie' connotates that a piece is more for entertainment and is lighter in subject or execution.

and 'flick' denotes an exploitation piece, action, slasher or porn.

see how u feel when u say: i want to see a _____.
a)film
b)movie
c)flick

Re: Here's something that bugs me

I'd like to think that its the actual MOVIE that brings to mind analogies of specific quality or artistic merit rather then some frivolous inclusion of the word “film”.

I can call a crappy finger painting HIGH ART all day long, but the thought won’t stick until someone reaches that conclusion in the absence of my suggestion.

(of course, I tend to say “I want to go see a movie”…so perhaps I am lowbrow)

Re: Here's something that bugs me

A film is something that uses motion pictures to evoke a response from its audience.

But a good movie needs to be a good film.

In order to be entertaining, it needs to be made well - at least be made well for what it is. And if that's the case, how can you say it was a bad film? It evoked the intended response from its audience.
