..the term "film" is used as a term to represent a "movie" or "cinematic experience" .. even if it was originated on video.. and displayed via electronic projection.
IMHO this is perfectly acceptable.. as we still reffer to movies which were shot on film soley for the purpose of bieng transferred to DVD or VHS .."films"
even though they were never released using film.
so ithink its just the heart of what you are doing,, rather than the medium used to do it.. just like the word "bad" can now mean cool or good..and so many other words have developed new meanings over time, its pretty hard to say that the word film cannot take on a new meaning as well.
i do understand what you are saying about the cable modem as well, since the word modem came from a modulation device, which cable modems do not do, but agin it is sompy a adaptation.. really most of the english language is adaptations of wrods from other languages which mean completely different hings originally though.
So let's just leave our DVX's, grab old super 8's and then we can be called filmakers again! If you want to be so specific and literal, we should say the only filmakers in the world are Kodak and Fuji. If you feel better, you can call me a videographer or videomaker, I won't be offended. But wou will hear me saying I make films until I die (and by then I hope there will not be that many films being made)...

Filmmaker is a bastardized title anyway. Kodak, Fuji, Illford, Agfa...those guys are filmmakers. As far as the jerks who call themselves "filmmakers" rather then directors or producers...they’re just slapping the faces of all the other people who contribute to the “film” by claiming sole-authorship.
I’ve adopted a much more realistic title...videographfamilker.
"Film" makes me feel better inside & its what I say when I switch the dvx on " Im making films !!!" " yes - films! - I am a f***in filmmaker!!! " " making films!!" " " "FILM- MAKER - ME!" " "AND NO ONE CAN TAKE THAT AWAY FROM ME!!" " I MAKE FILMS - yes im .. . making a film"
This method generally helps the process & gives me the confidence to carry the shoot off in a film like fashion
I think producer is the most applicable term in the long run. The recording or exhibition media is unimportant and for those in the know, it's obvious that the producer does all jobs that aren't credited to others. A film with no director credit, no cinematographer credit, no editor credit, and only a producer credit was obviously "produced" in its entirety by the Producer. Also the producer credit affords you a bit of latitude in your endeavors, where ‘filmmaker’ pigeonholes you into a specific idea of creative output.
But if we’re going to be perfectly honest with ourselves, insisting on the term “filmmaker” is just an attempt to classify ones self as an “artist”, and that’s really a title that you should allow others to bestow upon your work...not upon you.
I don’t think of myself as a filmmaker, I’m either a director, a producer, or a technician depending on the job I’m called to do, but in the end, the people that matter just call me James and I’m content to live by that title alone.
Or you can call me a vafamilmmakographer, your choice.

you are right Mr Barnes - thats why on my corp " film" called "red commerce" http://homepage.mac.com/acen/iMovieTheater12.html I put just the production credit only as a whole - I remember thinking at the time of - should I put "directed by" - "composed by" etc etc but a "production by" just seemed more natural & explanatory.
I still like the term " filmmaker" tho - as well ;D
[quote author=speedbump link=board=news;num=1090255233;start=0#0 date=07/19/04 at 09:40:33]Often, when we talk about what we do, we say we are 'film-making'.
No! We are NOT making films unless our content eventually finds itself on celluloid. This is like saying 'cable modem'. There's no such thing.
We are videographers

I used to share that same attitude about 10 years ago. The term *film* has been used by the layperson to describe video originated material for years. I suppose it's just a holdover of terms used and widely accepted by consumers in the recent past (Super 8, etc.).
It's such an uphill battle trying to convince or educate someone of which terms are appropriate that I'd rather spend my time doing other things...™ like posting here.
I'm certainly not a doctor, but I wouldn't want one rolling his eyes at me or interrupting my kidney stone attack to correct me on a word or term I misused.
Anyhow, I don't really care what a client calls it as long as they call me.
