Here's something that bugs me

Re: Here's something that bugs me

Hmm, why wouldn't any person who shoots film be called a filmmaker? Is it the subjective creative credential you're attaching to the word that determines a candid shot of a dog is crap and a well lit shot of a dog is art?

If video and film can be arbitrarily ascribed the same artistic label of “filmmaking” then what’s to stop any bloke with a camera from assuming the moniker of a filmmaker? What I mean is that if all our terms are arbitrary, then video is film and every dad at a softball game is a filmmaker.

I think the underlying truth of this topic is that filmmakers want to be recognized for their efforts in the pursuit of art without qualification, and because film carries a higher status then video, all the little DV denizens pick up the title of filmmaker in hopes to afford their efforts a little more worth.

While there’s an obvious persistent grammatical perversion in its use, I think the truth is that narcissism is as much a cause for the adoption of the title “filmmaker” as anything. It’s the narcissism that forces us to avoid qualifications like “video” in the presentation and pursuit of our projects. There’s the perception that video is a dilution of the art of film, and thus we eschew the word entirely from our creative vocabulary because of some underlying inferiority complex.

Instead of bravely standing for the medium that encapsulates our efforts, we attach the word FILM to our art because we hope to be included in the same category as those who do actually shoot film.

It’s narcissism and inferiority that causes us to strive for the credence attached to film, much like its narcissism and superiority that causes us to separate ourselves from the “casual family men” who have access to our tools.

Obviously this subject is being very overanalyzed, but I think there’s a reason why something that’s basically a grammatical issue receives so much attention.

What about pornography shot on film? Filmopornography?

or Pornography shot on video? Videopornography? pornovideography?

Or pornographic propaganda shot on video? Videopornopropagandography?

pixellated pornographic propaganda shot on film? digitapornopropagacinematography?

Or what if it's shot by a news crew?
digitapropagapornophotojournalism?

And don't forget videopornopropagajournaladocumentarianism

Nothing starts a war quite like semantics.

Re: Here's something that bugs me

we're having so much fun making videos we are like "man, this isn't real work, sure its hard but its TOO much fun to be real work, I know, If I call myself a filmmaker perhaps It will carry some weight with my high power business type friends"

Re: Here's something that bugs me

i think its a matter of being clear on what you do .. if you say your a filmmaker. people know you make movies.. what esle are you going to call yourself.. a movie producer that sounds inflated and exaggerated.. a director.. .. of what? womens athletics? .....if you say your a videographer .. as mentioned.. all of a sudden your a chump. its not a big deal to anyone that isnt in the biz. its only made a huff about by people in the biz that want to be distinguished becuase they shoot on film , and somehow believe that makes them better or more talented at what they do.. make movies..
people who shoot with film arent on some magical other level of talent or quality just cause they use actual film.. its not about trying to say your better than you are. its about trying to define what you do . for heavens sakes the janitor plunging toilets is a "sanitary maintenance technician" ..now thats title inflation .. calling onself a filmmaker raises the bar little to nothing. most people hear that and think "struggling artist who wants to make movies". i wouldnt call anyone with a camcorder a filmmaker.. i also wouldnt call anyone shooting on some film camera a fillmaker.. only those actually trying to make movies/films. a photographer isnt a filmmaker either but they shoot stuff on film..
and all this stuff about it not being a film unless its on film..?? we call DVD copies of movies "films" all the time even though its digital .. if you shoot a movie in digital but then its transferred to film.. is it a film? what if its never shown on film to anyone,, but its been transferred to it. could the digital copy then still be called a film cause its a movie that is on film somewhere on a shelf in a basement, even though people will only see it in digital. ...so whats the difference. what if it was shot digital .. projected digital,, and distributed digital. and at one point they trensferred it to film to do effects that werennt possible to do in video for some reason.. is it a film then? and if thats the case then why cant we call film which is transferred to video to do effects at one point in time a video. what if i hoot digital , and transfer to film, and then transfer it to film, and then burn the film copy.. all of a sudden since it was on film its a film.. this whole notion is just so odd to me , and as pointed outm it just doesnt make sense, everything is transferred all over the place nowadays, and what it comes down to is ..NOBODY CARES..
if anyone has a real issue with me or anyone else using the term filmmaker then i say let them have an issue with U.S. citizens incorrectly calling themsleves "americans" and our country "america" instead of "u.s. citizens, and "the united states of america" .. let them have an issue with "native americans " being called "indians". let them have an issue with anyone who is mixed black and white being called "black" ..its 50/50 so why not call them white? let them have an issue with calling the internet the "wolrd wide web" .. cause only spiders make webs.. let them have an issue with coke being called "coke" even though there is no longer any cocaine in it like there originally was. dont call anyone "bro" cause they arent really your brother, and dont call your computers mouse a mouse cause its not a real mouse. dont say lets go to my house, if you live in an apratment.
and dont tell your kids that santa or the easter bunny are coming cause they dont even exist.

i say lets not over generalize how the term is actually being used in real life.. lets just look at it for what its worth, and all learn to live with it as a definition of what someone does or is trying to do with the moving images they are capturing, cause its not going to stop any time soon, and its a waste of our time to write posts such as the one im typing now..

Re: Here's something that bugs me

Wait...your computer mouse isn't a real mouse?

Damn it, i've been handling this rodent all day for no good reason at all.

Re: Here's something that bugs me

..im not sure.. the other day i went to use my PC, and a hoot owl was lying dead on the desk.. apparently it choked when tying to swallow it becuase it was so life-like looking.
ive also had several failed attempts to mate it with the chucky cheeze doll my daughter has.. and i couldve sworn they'd be compatible..

Re: Here's something that bugs me

Let's look at it from another angle: what is "a film"? Everyone understands what a film is. It's a movie. It's a perhaps high-falutin' term for it, like "tonight we're going to the cinema" instead of "hey, let's watch a movie", but still, it's a universally understood term.

So a "filmmaker" makes movies.

What is a "video"? A video is an audiovisual presentation. People understand that. A training video is a training video. Doesn't matter whether it was shot on film or not. The word connotes a different type of product.

So when filmmakers call themselves filmmakers, even though they shoot on video, I don't know that that's misleading: they're implying that they make "films", or movies.

Narcissism aside, what's wrong with that?

Re: Here's something that bugs me

Also, I didn't say that narcissism is a bad thing!

I just think there's this undercurrent of inferiority in the DV community that doesn't need to be there. It's like how people that own metric cruisers shrink a little bit in the presense of a harley rider...because there's something in their brain somewhere that tells them they're not quite as good, yet pound for pound...most japanese manufacturerd choppers outperform their american counterparts at a lower price point.

It's a style difference, and only a slight one at that.

My point being, if I could ever claim to have one, is that there's got to be some truth to both sides of this argument from a psychological standpoint. It wouldn't get discussed so much if there weren't a tiny bit of contention within the filmmaker himself. That's why I believe it stems from some ingrained inferiority.

Otherwise, I have no idea what I'm talking about as usual...so please disregard.

Re: Here's something that bugs me

What about those who make documentaries? Are they documentarians? I like what Spike Lee did. He came up with his own term "joint." A Spike Lee Joint. He broke from every expectation.

Re: Here's something that bugs me

Correct me if I’m wrong…

The whole “filmmaking” platform or concept has changed and evolved a shitload in the last 120 years or so.

Arguably the birth of it all was back in the late 1800s with the zooipraxkiscope (spelling?). A spinning wheel with pictures on it. I think most of us have seen the footage – A horse running in place. (Definitely a film look) ;D Don’t know who invented it – think he’s dead now.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s tons of dudes were coming out with different cameras, different media, different formats… Hmmm … sounds familiar…

Edison is often credited with inventing “movies” but arguably, not really. Anyway…

The Cinematographe (familiar sounding word?) was a unit that could shoot / copy AND project movies. Invented by some French dudes, not sure names. These guys were pioneers to independent movies even before the Hollywood system was born. You could make your own copies, distribute and show your own work. Not unlike the good folks do here.

Now instead of rambling on all the changes over time and all the goofy names I’ll jump ahead a century…

Here we are with the format of “now” … DV … Not film, of course.

Point I hope I’m making is the format changes constantly. Since day one in fact – And so does some of the terms used for the media.

It started with a spinning wheel – Not film OR video. It won’t end with film OR video. I can’t even guess what will be used in another 100 years … Crystals? (Barry Green probably knows ;) )

Will we (we get to live to 250 in the future) be crystal makers? I think as long as people sit back and watch those crazy moving pictures, the guys and gals making them, will, indeed be filmmakers.

– Just food for thought. :-/

Re: Here's something that bugs me

Let me have a crack at this. (Sorry Rich)

cin·e·ma·tog·ra·phy
Pronunciation: "si-n&-m&-'tä-gr&-fE
Function: noun
: the art or science of motion-picture photography

motion picture
Function: noun
1 : a series of pictures projected on a screen in rapid succession with objects shown in successive positions slightly changed so as to produce the optical effect of a continuous picture in which the objects move
2 : a representation (as of a story) by means of motion pictures

Main Entry: film·mak·er
Pronunciation: 'film-"mA-k&r
Function: noun
: one who makes motion pictures

I have to go with FILMMAKER. Anyone who decries the term is an arse. We're making movies. Plain and simple. What? because we are not using Arri's or Pani's and shooting on KODAK VISION SERIES Stock? You dont think that Scorsese, Spielberg, De Palma and Coppola would not have used the mighty DVX100 when they were unknown film students? Do you Lucas would have not used digital over film? Exactly.

Lucas, Rodriguez, Soderberg, Danny Boyle and a ton of others have already used video to make their movies.

I havent resorted to calling myself a filmmaker but I do say "In my spare time I make films." I suppose when the day comes that I can "make films" and actually make a living then when someone asks "What do you do?" Ill proudly say IM A ****ING FILMMAKER.

Re: Here's something that bugs me

Yea, sounds like a hardcore porn director to me.

EDIT: Unless I'm grossly mis-informed about what you do for a living.
