Here is my DIY figrig solution...it rocks

ok sorry about the delay...start off with some 1/2" pvc that comes on a roll like this:


then you cut a length of pvc (i just kinda eyed it) and stick a male-to-male connector piece in that sucker and make a ring...you could use pvc cement if you have it but i just used superglue and a couple of wraps of gaff tape at the seam and its just fine...here's a pic with the aluminum angle-iron used as the crosspiece:

after you have a ring, wrap it up in padded griptape made for mountainbike handlebars...i just grabbed some from REI...after the ring is wrapped good (the sides especially) drill some holes in the aluminum (for a quick release and for attachment to the rig) and use conduit clips to hold the bar to the ring, like this:

then you slap a QR plate on there (or you already have) and you are pretty much done...here she is finished:

if it had a manfrotto plate it would be as good as the real thing only lighter...i'll be back in a minute to put up some more pics - any questions fire away...

here go a couple more of it next to a real figrig....and one of me using it...sorry it took so long...





 
nice job.. is it substantially lighter than the genuine-fig??? If so, do you think that would adversly affect it, with the lack of mass to "even everything out?"

it doesn't seem to be of any disadvantage to be lighter in weight....i personally like the figrig for some of the protection it offers as a "halo" around the camera...i am a snowboard videographer, so in case of a fall the rigidity and strength of the real figrig is an advantage over this pvc version besides that and the QR mount the DIY version is no different - just cheaper...
 
this is the only diy fig i've seen that doesn't look like a big homemade pvc mess. paint that crossbar black and it looks factory made. i have a real one but had i known you could get curved pvc ready made i might not have given up on making one so quick. good job.

is it really lighter??? the real one is only 2 lbs.
 
its actually about half the weight of the real-deal....keep in mind tho that this is with the crapper QR plate that i ripped off of a throwaway tripod - if you put a bogen QR plate on there it would be a little heavier but still lighter than the real figrig

What are the dimensions from the genuine fig-rig?

where do you get those rolls of pvc? Can you get it at home depot or lowes? I don't really remember if i ever saw anything like that where u get the regular white straight pvc. great design, I will probably make a similar one with a stand though.
