Help With Mic Purchase

I've been using the ME66 and am just so tired of all the ambient noise it picks up. I do an interview and it sounds like the guy is in a cave.
I really need to buy a new mic for my boom. Can anyone give me some direction on the right type of mic and a few recommended models.

Thanks,
Joe

For indoors a hyper is definitely best... but to be honest I've never liked the me66 even outdoors... later on tonight (after 12m) I'm going to be back home and I'll put up a comparison of the Rode NTG3 vs. the Sennheiser 416. I think you'll be surprised when you hear it for yourself... Ty had a comparison of the two online, and then it disappeared (I can't find it anyway). Point being that the 416 isn't anywhere near the price OR sound... of an me66... but the ntg3 sounds like a 416 at an me66 price. (approx)

The other thing in my little clip is you'll see how close I get the mic for best quality audio... you can check out the clip and then try your me66 so that it's absolutely "riding" the frame-line... that will also help... but if you have finally reached the point that you want more natural, and full sound from your shotgun... your timing is pretty good.

If you're happy with the me66 outdoors... and your complaints are for interiors... then I feel you... the me66 is especially bad indoors. There are some other shotguns that can pull off interiors passably well... a couple shotguns that can actually pull off interiors really well... but generally a hyper-cardioid is the go-to interior mic.

Thats why I love my cs3e. Ridiculous reach and zero traditional shotgun
issues on interiors.
Ive used the cs3e for a scene in a feature thats coming out
in a few weeks
where it was about 6-7ft out in a living room and it sounds like it was a foot
over their head no ill effects. (just wish it was a tad less noisy)

Ive also used it for a sitcom and it worked wonderfully on super "sitcom" wides.

Yep... that's the exact gun I had in mind when I said that. I've used a CS3e for Modern Marvels, and a new show that's due out on The Discovery Channel... called "Commodities"... look for the episode on lead. I've also used that gun on segments for The Early Show... and some other crap I can't remember right now. If I could only have ONE mic, that would be the one... but if you have a selection, there are times when I reach for something else... still... great great mic.

Since you have an ultimate reference mic... I hope you get a chance to play with an ntg3. The 416 isn't the equal to a cs3e... but it's at least in the ballpark... and the ntg3 is in the same game as the 416... now if Rode could create something like the cs3e then I'd get a Rode tattoo.

Anyway... yes, the CS3e is great... but it's also $1400... so... you know... we're getting pretty darn serious at that point. :)

Wow, thanks for all the input so far.
Given my budget, at this point it sounds like the NTG-3 is the way to go for me. As much as I'd like to go with the Sanken CS-3E, it's just too pricey right now.

Matt, I look forward to the comparison you're gonna post.

I left "serious" in the dust a long time ago :)

Starting from the bottom up (including the bag):

Petrol PEGZ-2
Sound Devices 442 (4 channel mixer)
Sound Devices 788 (8 channel recorder)
Sound Devices 302 (3 channel mixer... probably bridged or splitting the 788 w/ 442)
next to that is BDS power distribution (light blue box is power hub and switch for whole bag... which runs on an NP-1... probably an IDX NP7s... in a cup... with a spare next to it in a hidden pocket on the back of the bag (in MINE anyway, but maybe in that front pocket for Rippie)
That long silver mic is likely an older 815...
In front of that is the Sanken CS3e...
In front of that is a Sennheiser MKH-60...
In front of that are two Schoeps mics... the first looks a little older because of the nickel finish but it's something... like a cmc5 w/mk41 or cmc6 w/mk41... and that's what's in front of it also... yeah... already nutty serious bag...
Then in all the outer pouches that looks like Lectro 211s... with the diversity of course...
...and on the front... your com to jump audio to all the important people that have to hear what you're doing... (that looks too narrow to be a comtek... maybe some telex model I don't remember)...

So... how many did I miss?

The rest of it you pretty much nailed.
