I've captured 24p video with an anamorphic adapter on my dvx. when i try to import into FCP, the video isn't widescreen. Is this a FCP problem or a deck problem?

Did you check anamorphic during capture? You can also do this in your bin by clicking the checkbox on in your clip attributes for each clip. And make sure the sequence is also set to anamorphic. The image itself is the same, merely how it's interpreted and displayed.

here's the thing. I have a little $250 panasonic cam for a deck. when i playback in this, it's not anamorphic. but when it's played back on the dvx, it's anamorphic. do i need to use the dvx to capture?

i figured it out. for some reason my lil panny doesn't show the video in anamorphic, but it captures properly. i guess this is normal? thanks again, noah.

You would need a 16:9/4:3 switchable NTSC monitor connected to the DV device. Unsqueezed 16:9 on a 4:3 display looks like this:

while unsqueezed onto a 16:9/4:3 display looks like this:

or displayed on a 16:9 native monitor:
