sony Vs. Red? Sony's early response to Red?

Couldn't Jim Jannard just purchase his own 4k projector in this case?

It's only what? 100,000 dollars?

Hell maybe they could build a Red 4k projector for a fraction of that cost too.

Typical. Don't come up with a better product, just try to keep other people from doing it. Bastards.

Well, at the risk of seeing to side with Sony The only thing I would like to clear up is that factually speaking Sony (in partnership with Panavision) does actually have a full 35mm Digital Motion Camera:

Panavision Genesis

http://www.panavision.com.au/

Technically speaking they got there before RED, otherwise Superman Returns was just my imagination.

Now what RED does offer is the level of technology at the price point that no one else has done before.

That's kinda what I was getting at (but didn't actually say). Damn it, Anhar! You should be able to read my mind by now.:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Now a RED-Projector that would be awsome. Imagine getting a 4K Projector with a price point of only 20,000 or so. My home theater would kick poo pooo. Of course that mean I would have to add a room the size of a basketball court on the back of my house but I would be more then willing to do that.

Umm....no,

Red is still vaporware at the price point that no one else has done before.

Prices are subject to change.....

ha ha wouldnt that be funny.

Oh.. good news, the camera is released. Bad news, Its $135,000.

Ha ha ah... i am pretty sure thats not gonna happen.

This is a very strange thread indeed.

Sony, major player.
Red, still green and on the tree.

Any mention of Red is accompanied with much applause.
Any mention of Sony is met by derision and hate.

Sony has a track record, both pro and consumer.
Red has no track record.

It is a forseeable reality that virtually no one who reads these forums is likely to ever buy a Red system, and the trickle down effect on consumer or prosumer prices is either unlikely, or years away at best.

What Red is doing has been done before, as has been mentioned, they are just making it somewhat "affordable" if you will. To expect that Sony, or Panasonic for that matter would gleefully cooperate with a possible competitor is verging on the ludicrous to say the least, but for people to "expect" it, is even more so.

The reality of the situation is more likely, although those connected to Red will furiously deny it, that Red will be purchased by one of the major players, and be integrated into their line, remember, money always talks, no matter how much of it Jim Jannard and all those involved already have.

Bashing Sony is just as embarassing as bashing Panasonic, Canon or JVC would be, this is big business, Red wants in, but the club is small.

A very strange thread indeed.

Not sure if I agree with all of Old Guy's post above here.

But I do agree with his ealier ones.

It's not the price of the camera he was comemnting on, it's the fact that curently, there is no camera.
Don't get me wrong, I think what RED is hoping to do, and what the team is dooing, is fantastic. If they can pull it off, great.

But I think Old Guy agrees with me that it's kinda crazy to put a deposit (and a big one at that) on a product that does not exsist yet. To me it almost seems like an investment. And investments can be lost. Sony does have the "tried and true" behind them. They make a lot of good gear that is used worldwide.

So far I'm happy to speek highly of the RED idea and the plan. But untill it exsists, there's not that much more to talk about.

In a few days we will have images to talk about. But that's still a long way from a final product.

Me Skeptical? Maybe. Cautious? Yes. Hopefull? Very.

Sony however just pulled some serious shi* that I don't like. :furious3: :furious3: They just got a place in my bad books for quite a while.

- Mikko ... isn't refering to the IBC stunt.

Im trying to keep an open mind about all of this to see how it does play out at the backend and we are awhile from that.

But that comment above is very true and you can add to that very protective.

When people bash large companies such as sony, apple, panasonic you have to understand one thing. They have a responsibilty to their shareholders, and thats the way the world is these days... Most companies dont take decisions lightly, but they must protect their shareholders. I guarantee you that not one Sony shareholder in the world would have a problem with this story even if it turned out that Sony was playing a blocking game (this point as yet unconfirmed per Jarred and Jim Janards posts).

If it turns out to be entirely true that Sony are doing it to cause difficulties, I would agree that man that totally sux. But as a Sony shareholder I wouldnt complain.

Now I do think that if you truly believe Sony, Panasonic et al dont have the resources to produce a camera similar to RED for the same pricepoint then there is some confusion. Of course they can. They already have the technology to do so. But they dont because of one point. They are playing a profit game to capitalise for their shareholders..... people like any of us that have an investment in anything. They can sell is their offerings because thats all that is available to us. Now with red coming out much lower for these high end specs, I would imagine if the profitibilty of Sony or other companies products suffers in anyway, which I would equate to liitle more than an armpit rash at the end of the day (these are massive companies wuth huge product arrays), they will bang it out.... which would be great for everyone... the one reason I always hoped red could deliver and upset the wagon. Sony has nothing personal against RED, they cant there is no emotion, they have a job to do.

On a personal level I hope Jim can sort this out, as it would be great to somehow get a preview of what the output is like. I imagine moreso for those of you with reservations.

Yes Mikko, exactly-ish.The day I can order a Red system, at the advertised price, and run up to the Fedex man who is holding that big box of toy........Till then, there's nothing, nada. Interesting promises, but........And bashing Sony is very poor form.

Well put indeed. This is business, big business. If Red has the $$$$, they'll try to compete.Sony does have the money, they'll try to win.

All sony is know for is making over priced camera equipment that sets some invisable standered. And then not listening to the user base and just doing and going into the direction that it thinks is right. Just look at the playstation 3 oh wait you can't its not out. This gose all the way from there failed music players to there camera line. Why did the F950 take so long to come out. You use to be able to be the big bad company and dictate to the user what they want and what they are getting. This time is over with Panasonic taking the lead with the HVX and RED. RED dose excist and at the price point they announced. I personally feel that even if RD gose up Jim would take the hit in potentail prophet loss then up the price for us users to get the camera. The camera that has all along been built by the users for the user. Even if you can't affored RED you can get behind the idea. its not about a camera that can shoot 4k. Sony or Panasonic or Arri could have put on in devlopment along time ago if they wanted to . But to them the the 200% prophet mark up on the camera that they want wouldn't be realistic. But then you have Jim/RED who wants to make a camera that works and is better then anything out there for a price that is resonable. He dosen't need the 200% markup. So this is going to change everything. Not just cameras. You are going to see other visionariess like Jim who say, I can make a better one, Something the user's want, and Why the hell dose it have to cost so much.

RED is an idea not a camera.
